LG OE fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
The drain pump. But LG publish a second cause that no third-party site carries, and it explains why a dryer in a cold garage throws this code in January.
Take care
What OE means
LG label this DRAIN PUMP ERROR and give the obvious cause first: "The drain pump motor has malfunctioned", with their standard instruction to unplug and call for service. In the RHX1009NNK manual that is the whole entry. But the FDC309W, FDV909W and FDV709GN manuals carry a second cause that changes the picture entirely — "The surrounding temperature for installation is below zero" — with the remedy "The recommended surrounding temperature for installation is 5 - 35 ℃."
That is a genuinely valuable piece of information and we have not found it on any third-party site. It means an LG dryer in an unheated garage, outhouse or utility room showing this code in the middle of winter may have nothing wrong with its pump at all. Water in the pump or the hose has frozen, or the machine is simply operating outside the range LG specify.
The fix is warmth and patience rather than a repair. It also has a wider implication for anyone with a dryer in a cold space: LG give a working range of 5 to 35 degrees, and a machine below the bottom of that range is not being asked to do something it was designed for. If your dryer lives somewhere that gets genuinely cold, this code appearing seasonally is a strong hint about the cause.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| The room is below freezing | LG publish this as a cause in its own right, with a specified working range of 5 to 35 degrees. A garage or outhouse in winter falls outside it, and the pump cannot move water that has frozen. | Common |
| The drain pump is blocked with lint | Fibre carried into the condensate circuit collects in the pump over years until the impeller cannot turn. The machine commands the pump and nothing moves. | Common |
| The drain pump motor has failed | LG’s stated first cause. Motors in a wet environment do eventually fail, and this is the version where nothing is blocked and nothing is frozen. | Occasional |
| A kinked or blocked drain hose | On plumbed-in machines. A crushed hose behind the appliance gives the pump something it cannot push against, which is indistinguishable from a pump fault from the outside. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Take the washing out, then ask where the machine lives and how cold it is. If it is a garage or an outhouse and the weather is freezing, LG’s second cause is likely your answer.
If cold is a possibility, warm the room and leave the machine several hours before trying again. LG give the recommended range as 5 to 35 degrees, and their own advice for a machine delivered in freezing weather is to "place the appliance at room temperature for a few hours before putting it into operation".
Warm the space rather than the appliance. Do not apply a heat gun or a naked flame to any part of a dryer.Empty the water container if your machine has one, and push it fully back into position.
If the machine is plumbed into a waste pipe, follow the hose and check for kinks, crush points behind the machine, or a loop holding standing water that could have frozen.
Try a short cycle once the machine has been at room temperature for a few hours.
If the code persists in a warm room with a clear hose, you are on LG’s first cause and their instruction applies: unplug it and call for service.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your LG OE
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.
What it costs to fix

Nothing if it turns out to be the cold, which is why it is worth ruling that out first. A drain pump with labour is the usual chargeable outcome. LG publish no repair prices, so any figure is an independent market estimate.

- F1Stop — call an engineerThe drum temperature has risen suddenly, and LG say unplug it and call. One LG manual also assigns this same code to a compressor failure, which is a documentation error worth knowing about.Related: same brand

Common questions about LG OE
My dryer is in the garage and this only happens in winter.
Then LG’s own second cause almost certainly explains it. They publish "The surrounding temperature for installation is below zero" as a cause of this code, with a recommended range of 5 to 35 degrees. Warm the space and give it a few hours before assuming the pump has failed.
Why does no other site mention the temperature thing?
Because it is in the manuals rather than on a support page, and not in all of them — the FDC309W, FDV909W and FDV709GN manuals carry it, the RHX1009NNK manual does not. It is official, it is useful, and it is easy to miss if you read only one manual or copy from another site. LG’s installation chapter backs it up: "Do not install the appliance in rooms where freezing temperatures may occur. Frozen hoses may burst under pressure."
Can I clean the pump myself?
Not on these machines. LG give no owner access and their published instruction is to unplug and call. What you can do without opening anything is check an external drain hose and rule out the cold, which between them account for a good proportion of these.
Is a dryer in a cold garage a bad idea generally?
It is a compromise. LG specify 5 to 35 degrees and a machine below that will struggle — heat pump models more than most, because they work by moving heat rather than making it. Expect longer cycles in winter even when nothing is wrong. The FDC309W manual has a section on draining the condensed water that stagnates in the base of the machine, and notes that doing so "can prevent the appliance from unexpected freezing" — worth doing before a cold spell if your dryer lives somewhere unheated.
