Miele F252 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Dirty contacts in the door hinge area. One of the very few Miele codes with a genuine owner fix, and it takes a cloth.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the tumble dryer.

What F252 means

Miele give the cause as "The door contacts in the area of the door hinge are dirty" and the instruction as "Clean the door contacts. If the fault persists, please contact Miele Customer Service or book a repair appointment online." That is the whole thing, and for a brand that tells you 24 times out of 28 that you cannot fix the fault yourself, being handed a cloth is worth noticing.

What is going on is small electrical contacts near the hinge that the machine uses to confirm the door state, and over years they pick up a film of lint, dust and the residue that fabric conditioner leaves on everything in a laundry room. A film thin enough to be invisible is thick enough to make an intermittent contact, which is why this fault often behaves erratically — fine one day, appearing twice the next.

Two practical notes. Look carefully before you wipe, because the contacts are small and easy to miss if you are expecting something more obvious. And be aware that Miele publish this article under a heading covering both washing machines and tumble dryers, so it is shared across product lines rather than being dryer-specific.

What causes it

Causes of the Miele F252 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
A film of lint and dust on the contactsThe ordinary version. A laundry room is a dusty environment by definition, and the contacts sit right at the opening where all of it passes.Common
Fabric conditioner residueConditioner leaves a film on everything nearby over time, and on an electrical contact that film is enough to make the connection unreliable without looking dirty at all.Common
Corrosion or damage to a contactWhere cleaning makes no difference, the contact surface itself may be pitted or a spring may have lost tension. Miele’s escalation applies at this point.Occasional
A misaligned door putting the contacts out of positionA door that has dropped slightly on its hinge over years may not bring the contacts together consistently. It usually shows up as a door that needs a firmer push than it used to.Rare

What to try yourself

  1. Switch the machine off at the wall before touching anything electrical, even something this minor.

  2. Open the door fully and look closely at the hinge side for the small metal contacts. They are easy to overlook if you are expecting something larger.

  3. Wipe them with a dry or barely damp cloth. Miele ask for cleaning rather than anything more involved, so avoid abrasives and solvents.

Do not use a metal implement to scrape them. The surfaces are thin and scratching them makes the contact worse rather than better.
  4. Wipe the matching contacts on the door itself, since both halves collect the same film.

  5. Let everything dry, restore power, close the door firmly and run a short programme.

  6. If the code persists, Miele’s own escalation is to contact their customer service or book a repair online.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele F252

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Free — this is a wipe with a cloth. If cleaning does not resolve it the escalation is a Miele service call, and their rates are at the premium end of the market.

Common questions about Miele F252

It comes and goes rather than appearing every time.

That is characteristic of a dirty contact rather than a broken one. A film makes the connection intermittent, so the machine works normally until it happens to make a poor contact. Erratic behaviour here is a reason to clean rather than a reason to worry.

Miele’s article mentions washing machines too.

It does — the article is headed for both washing machine and tumble dryer displays, so the same code and the same remedy cover both product lines. It is not an error and it does not mean you are reading the wrong page.

Should I use contact cleaner?

Miele say only to clean the contacts and do not specify a product. A dry or barely damp cloth is what we would use. Solvents and abrasives risk damaging a surface that only needs a film removing.
