Miele F55 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedTumble dryerMiele dryers running residual moisture drying programmes. Miele state the 180-minute limit applies only to those programmes, so timed programmes do not produce this codeLast updated

The machine gave up after three hours with the washing still damp. Miele name a cause most people would not think of: the spin speed on your washing machine.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Miele properly.

What F55 means

Miele are specific about what triggers this, and the specificity is the useful part: "The laundry is still not dry after the maximum drying time of 180 minutes", and it applies only to the residual moisture drying programmes — the ones that run until the load is dry rather than for a set time. So the machine has not broken. It has worked for three hours, hit a hard limit built into the programme, and stopped.

Miele give four headings, and two of them say the same thing. The drum is too full, the fluff filters are soiled, and — the one worth pausing on, which Miele state twice — the laundry is too damp, with the instructions "Spin in the washing machine at a higher speed" and, under a second heading about laundry that "has not been spun sufficiently", "Spin the laundry in the washing machine at the highest possible speed." That is a fault on the dryer being caused by a setting on a different appliance, and it is easy to miss. Water your washing machine did not spin out has to be evaporated by the dryer instead, using electricity and time.

Going from a 1000 rpm spin to a 1400 rpm one removes a surprising amount of water for a few seconds of extra spinning, and it can be the difference between a load that finishes inside the limit and one that does not. If your dryer started hitting this after you changed washing machines, or after you started using a gentler wash programme, that is very likely your answer.

What causes it

Causes of the Miele F55 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The laundry went in too wetMiele’s remedy is to spin at a higher speed in the washing machine — at "the highest possible speed", in the second of the two headings they give this cause. Water removed by spinning costs seconds; the same water removed by the dryer costs a great deal of time and electricity.Common
The drum is too fullA packed drum both holds more water and tumbles worse, so the air cannot reach the middle of the load. Two problems at once, and it is the commonest cause after wet washing.Common
The fluff filters are soiledMiele publish their full fluff filter cleaning procedure as part of the remedy for this code — upper filter pulled forwards, lower filter released with the yellow rotary control, rinsed under warm water and dried before refitting. Restricted airflow means the machine works slowly enough to run out of time.Common
A mixed load with heavy and light items togetherNot a cause Miele name, but a common practical explanation. Towels and a duvet cover in the same load means the light items finish long before the heavy ones and the programme keeps running for the slowest thing in there.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Check what spin speed your washing machine finished on. Miele’s own remedy for this code is to spin at a higher speed, and below about 1000 rpm you are asking the dryer to do the washing machine’s work.

  2. Take the load out, spread it, and look at how much there is. Reduce it if the drum was more than comfortably full.

  3. Clean the fluff filters. Miele include the full procedure in their answer to this code: open the door, pull the upper fluff filter forwards, turn the yellow rotary control on the lower filter until it clicks and pull that out too, clear every filter surface and the perforated laundry deflector, vacuum the upper air flow openings with a crevice nozzle, rinse the filter surfaces under warm running water, shake and dry them carefully, then refit and lock the lower filter with the rotary control. Miele warn that wet fluff filters can cause faults during drying.

  4. Separate heavy items from light ones. A load of towels dries predictably; towels mixed with shirts runs until the towels are done.

  5. Run the load again, or finish it on a timed programme, which is not subject to the 180-minute residual moisture limit.

  6. If a modest, well-spun load with clean filters still cannot finish inside three hours, the machine is genuinely underperforming. Miele’s own closing line on this code is that if the fault persists you should contact their customer service or book a repair online.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele F55

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£240

Time on site

20 minutes

Free in most cases, since the remedies are a spin speed, a load size and a filter. A machine that genuinely cannot dry a normal load in three hours needs a visit, and Miele labour is at the premium end.

Common questions about Miele F55

Does this mean the dryer is broken?

Not by itself. It means a residual moisture programme reached its 180-minute limit with the load still damp. That can happen to a perfectly healthy machine given wet enough washing or a full enough drum. It only indicates a fault if it happens with a modest, well-spun load and clean filters.

Why does the spin speed on my washing machine matter so much?

Because spinning water out mechanically is fast and cheap, and evaporating it with heat is slow and expensive. Miele name it directly as a remedy for this code. The difference between a 1000 and a 1400 rpm spin is a meaningful amount of water that the dryer would otherwise have to boil off.

Will a timed programme avoid it?

It will avoid the code, because Miele apply the 180-minute limit to the residual moisture programmes specifically. Whether it dries the load is a different question — if the underlying issue is a full drum or blocked filters, a timed programme just runs and leaves you with damp washing and no explanation.
