Miele F50 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedTumble dryerPublished by Miele UK for tumble dryers without a model restriction. The door-opening trigger applies to machines that allow laundry to be added mid-programmeLast updated

Three quite different things share this number, and one of them is a software glitch that appears about a minute after you open the door to add something.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Miele properly.

What F50 means

Miele publish three separate causes here and they could hardly be less alike. The first is simply that the drum is too full, with the instruction not to exceed the maximum load for the programme you have chosen. The third is a technical fault requiring Miele customer service. The second is the interesting one, and it is the sort of thing manufacturers usually keep to themselves: "After opening the door, e.g. to add laundry, F50 may appear in the display after approx. 1 minute. There is a software fault."

Miele are telling you outright that their own software has a bug, describing the exact circumstances that trigger it, and giving the fix — "Switch the appliance off and back on again straight away." That candour is rare and it is genuinely useful, because it means an owner who opened the door to throw in a forgotten sock and then saw a fault code a minute later has not broken anything.

Note the word straight away in Miele’s instruction. The timing appears to matter to them, so switch it off and back on promptly rather than leaving it standing. If the code appeared without you opening the door, and the drum is not overloaded, then you are on the third cause.

What causes it

Causes of the Miele F50 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The drum is too fullMiele’s first cause and their instruction is simply not to exceed the maximum load size for the programme selected. Different programmes have different maximums on the same machine, which catches people out.Common
A software fault triggered by opening the door mid-cycleMiele document this explicitly: open the door to add laundry and the code may appear about a minute later. They call it a software fault in their own words and it is not damage to the machine.Common
A genuine technical faultThe third of Miele’s causes, with no further detail and an instruction to contact customer service. This is where you land once the load size and the door-opening explanation are both ruled out.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Think back a minute. Did you open the door to add or check something just before the code appeared? If so, this is Miele’s documented software fault rather than a broken machine.

  2. Switch the appliance off and back on again straight away. Miele specify the timing, so do it promptly rather than leaving the machine standing.

  3. Take the washing out and look at how much of it there is. Check the maximum load for the specific programme you selected rather than the machine’s headline capacity.

  4. Reduce the load if it is near or over that maximum, spread it loosely in the drum, and start the programme again.

  5. If F50 appears with a modest load and without the door having been opened, you are on Miele’s third cause and it needs their customer service.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele F50

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Free for the two common causes, since one is a load size and the other is a documented glitch with a published workaround. Miele’s third cause is a service call and their labour rates are at the premium end of the market.

Common questions about Miele F50

It appeared right after I opened the door to add something.

Then you have almost certainly hit the software fault Miele document. Their wording is that after opening the door, for example to add laundry, the code may appear after approximately one minute. Switch the machine off and straight back on again.

How full is too full?

It depends on the programme rather than the machine. Miele’s instruction is not to exceed the maximum load size for the drying programme selected, and delicate or low-temperature programmes have smaller maximums than the cotton ones. Your manual lists them per programme.

Is it unusual for a manufacturer to admit to a software fault?

Very. Most would describe the same behaviour as a sensor issue or say nothing at all. Miele name it as a software fault, describe exactly what triggers it, and publish the workaround, which we think is worth crediting.
