Samsung 3C fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedTumble dryerAll Samsung dryers with an inverter motor, which is the current UK range. Samsung publish no machine-type breakdown for this codeLast updated

The inverter motor that turns the drum is not doing what the board asked. Samsung want one restart before you conclude anything.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Samsung properly.

What 3C means

Samsung give this as "Check the Inverter motor for operation" and their instruction is simply to try restarting the cycle. That brevity is telling: they are not offering owner checks because there are none worth giving, but they are also not sending you straight to an engineer, because a proportion of these clear on a restart. An inverter motor is driven by electronics that vary its speed continuously rather than switching it between fixed speeds, which is what allows a modern dryer to tumble gently in one direction and then reverse to stop the load roping. The board watches what the motor actually does and compares it against what it commanded.

When the two disagree, this is the code. The disagreement can be the motor, the electronics driving it, or something purely mechanical — a drum that cannot turn freely because a garment has worked its way behind it, or a belt that is slipping. That last case is the one worth listening for, because a dryer whose motor runs while the drum stays still makes a distinctive sound and it is the cheapest of the possible answers.

What causes it

Causes of the Samsung 3C fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Something is obstructing the drumA sock or an underwire that has escaped past the seal can jam between the drum and the casing. The motor tries, the drum will not move, and the board reports a motor that is not performing as commanded.Common
The drive belt has slipped or brokenYou can usually hear this one: the machine runs and sounds normal but the drum does not turn. It is a mechanical failure reported as an electrical fault because the board only knows what the motor tells it.Common
The inverter electronics have faultedThe board that drives the motor is a separate assembly on these machines, and Samsung have a distinct code, AC6, for the two boards failing to communicate. A fault here presents as a motor that will not start or will not hold speed.Occasional
The motor itself has failedBearings, windings or the position sensor inside the motor. The least likely of the four and the most expensive, which is why it is worth checking the cheap mechanical causes first.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Take the load out and spread it, then look and listen. Does the drum turn at all when you start it, or does the machine hum without movement?

  2. With the machine off, turn the drum by hand. It should move freely with a little resistance. If it is stiff or catches, something is jammed.

  3. Feel round the inside of the drum and along the baffles for a garment, a wire or a coin that has worked its way in.

  4. Restart the cycle. This is Samsung’s entire published remedy for this code, and it does clear a proportion of them.

  5. If the drum will not turn under power but spins freely by hand, that pattern points at the belt or the motor rather than an obstruction, and it is time to call.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Samsung 3C

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£280

Time on site

15 minutes

Free if something was jammed. A belt is at the cheaper end of dryer repairs, and a motor or inverter board is at the expensive end. Samsung publish no repair prices, so these are independent market estimates.

Common questions about Samsung 3C

The motor sounds like it is running but the drum is still.

That is the belt, almost certainly. It is a common failure on any dryer, it is not dangerous, and it is one of the cheaper repairs — though it does mean the back or front of the machine coming off, which is not an owner job.

Samsung only say "restart the cycle". Is that really all?

It is all they publish, and it is honest as far as it goes — there genuinely is not much an owner can check on a motor. What they omit is the drum-by-hand test, which costs nothing and tells you whether you are looking at an obstruction, a belt or the motor.

What is AC6?

A related but different code. Samsung give it as a failure of communication between the main board and the inverter board — the two halves of the electronics that drive the motor not talking to each other. Same territory, different component, and their remedy is also to restart first.
