Samsung dC fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Usually simple to fixTumble dryerAll Samsung dryers. Samsung publish no machine-type restriction on this code and every dryer has a door interlockLast updated

The dryer thinks the door is open. Samsung name a cause most people would never guess: the child lock can produce this on a machine that is not even running.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the tumble dryer.

What dC means

Straightforwardly, Samsung give this as "Dryer operation with the door open" and tell you to close the door, make sure no laundry is caught in it, and start again. What lifts it above the ordinary is the third thing they say: "Check if the Child Lock is on. If the Child Lock is on, you may get this message when you open the door even though the dryer is not operating." That is a genuinely obscure behaviour and it explains an otherwise baffling situation — a machine sitting idle that complains about its door the moment you open it.

If you have children and the lock is engaged, that is very likely all this is. The ordinary version is the ordinary version: a dryer door needs to be pushed until the catch engages, and a sleeve or a corner of a duvet cover across the opening will hold it a few millimetres out.

Samsung ask you to check for laundry caught in the door specifically, which suggests they see plenty of it. Note that on Samsung’s newest machines you will not see this code at all — the Bespoke AI generation displays the sentence "Door is open" instead, and has a second message, "Open door & check inside", for the child lock case.

What causes it

Causes of the Samsung dC fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The door is not fully latchedIt needs a positive push until the catch clicks. A door resting against the frame looks closed and is not, and the machine has no way to distinguish that from open.Common
Washing is caught in the door openingSamsung name this explicitly. A sleeve or a corner of bedding trapped in the seal holds the door a few millimetres proud, which is enough for the catch to miss.Common
The child lock is engagedSamsung’s own explanation: with the lock on, opening the door can produce this message even though the machine is not running. Nothing is wrong and nothing needs fixing.Occasional
The door switch has failedWhen the door is demonstrably shut and nothing is caught, the switch reporting its state is what remains. Samsung have a separate code, dF, for a switch they consider incorrect rather than merely open.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Open the door fully and close it with a deliberate push until you feel the catch engage.

  2. Run a hand round the opening for a sleeve, a corner of bedding or a sock trapped in the seal.

  3. Check whether the child lock is on. Samsung confirm it can produce this message on a machine that is not even running, and turning it off is the whole fix if so.

  4. Look at the catch on the door and the socket it enters for damage, lint packed into the recess, or a catch that is loose.

  5. Start a short cycle. If dC persists with the door plainly shut and the lock off, the switch needs looking at.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Samsung dC

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£130

Time on site

5 minutes

Free in nearly every case. A door switch or lock assembly with labour is the only chargeable outcome and sits at the cheaper end of dryer repairs.

Common questions about Samsung dC

The machine is not even running and it says the door is open.

Check the child lock. Samsung document exactly this: with the lock engaged, opening the door can trigger the message on an idle machine. It is behaviour rather than a fault.

My display shows dE, or the words "Door is open".

All the same thing. dE is the older display convention, dC the newer, and Samsung’s current Bespoke AI machines have dropped codes for this fault entirely in favour of the plain sentence.

What is dF then?

A different and more serious code. Samsung give dF as "Incorrect door switch" and their instruction is to check for loose or damaged wiring in the door lock circuit, noting the whole assembly may need replacing. dC means the machine thinks the door is open; dF means it does not trust the switch.
