Samsung NC2 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedTumble dryerHeat pump machines only. Samsung publish this code with the scope "Internal heat exchanger cover problem", and a vented or condenser machine has no such assemblyLast updated

The inner cover of the heat exchanger is not fitted properly. Usually something an owner has just done, and usually fixable in a minute.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Samsung properly.

What NC2 means

Behind the flap at the bottom front of a Samsung heat pump dryer there is a finned block, and in front of that block sits a cover that has to be latched shut for the machine to work. Samsung give the code as "Internal heat exchanger cover problem" and ask you to check the assembly. The reason this deserves its own page is that it is nearly always self-inflicted, in a good way: it appears just after somebody has cleaned the heat exchanger and not quite got the cover back on.

That makes it the one code on this brand that tells you something encouraging, because it means you found the part of the machine most owners never open. The cover matters more than it looks. It seals the air path so that everything the fan moves goes through the fins rather than round them. With it loose, air short-circuits past the exchanger, the machine dries badly, and the compressor runs hot — which is how a cover left ajar turns into a different code a fortnight later. Push it until it latches.

What causes it

Causes of the Samsung NC2 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The cover was not latched after cleaningThe overwhelming majority of these. The cover seats with a definite click and it is easy to leave it resting in place looking closed, particularly if the heat exchanger behind it has been pushed back slightly proud.Common
The fixers on the inner cover are not lockedSamsung’s inner cover is held by two fixers that you unlock to take it off and must turn back to lock it. A cover pushed into place with the fixers left open sits where it should and still reads as missing. Samsung’s own cure for an alarm that will not clear is to take the inner cover off and refit it.Common
A latch or a hinge on the cover is brokenThese are plastic parts opened and closed by hand, sometimes with force, and a snapped catch means the cover can no longer be held in the position the sensor expects.Occasional
The switch that detects the cover has failedWhen the cover is demonstrably shut and latched and the code persists, what is left is the sensor reporting it. That is an engineer job rather than an owner one.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Switch the machine off and press the top of the outer cover at the bottom front so it opens and exposes the heat exchanger compartment.

  2. Unlock the two fixers on the inner cover, pull the cover off, wipe it with a damp cloth as Samsung suggest, and look at the fixers and the edges of the cover for anything cracked or caught.

Do not touch the finned block behind the cover with bare hands. Samsung’s manual also says a small amount of refrigerant can linger in the compartment and to ventilate it for about ten minutes before cleaning in there.
  3. Reinsert the inner cover in its original position and turn the fixers to lock it. Samsung’s manual gives exactly this — remove and reinsert the inner cover — as the fix for an alarm that will not clear, so a cover that looks shut but was never locked is the usual story.

  4. Close the outer cover. If the message persists, unplug the machine, wait thirty seconds and plug it back in, which is the other remedy Samsung give.

  5. Restart and run a short cycle. If NC2 clears, the cover was the whole story. If it returns with the cover demonstrably locked, the switch that detects it is the remaining candidate and that is a service call.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Samsung NC2

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£120

Time on site

10 minutes

Free almost always, since this is a cover that needs closing properly. A broken latch or a failed sensor is the only chargeable outcome and is at the cheaper end of appliance parts.

Typical UK prices including parts and labour, updated September 2026. Your quote may differ.

Common questions about Samsung NC2

It appeared right after I cleaned the filter.

Then you almost certainly have the answer. This code exists precisely for the situation where someone has been into the heat exchanger compartment and the cover has not gone back correctly. Open it and close it again firmly.

What is the difference between NC and NC2?

NC is the lint filter in the door, which Samsung word as "Check filter". NC2 is the inner cover of the heat exchanger, much lower down behind the front flap. Different components, different places, and NC2 is the one most owners have never opened.

My display shows nC2 with a small n.

Same code. Samsung’s own manuals render it as NC2 in one document and nC2 in another, and their support page uses the capital. The case carries no meaning.
