Hotpoint F02 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
The drum is not turning as it should during a wash. Hotpoint route this straight to an engineer, but a jammed drum produces the same code and costs nothing to rule out.

What F02 means
Hotpoint list F02 as a motor circuit fault, with the symptom given as intermittent drum rotation or none at all during the wash. Their advice column contains no owner steps — this is one of the ten codes where the entire recommendation is to book an engineer. There is one thing worth establishing before that call, and it is free. A drum that is physically obstructed produces the same complaint as a motor that has failed, because in both cases the machine commands rotation and does not get it. A bra wire that has escaped through a drum perforation and wedged against the outer tub will stop the drum dead. So will a coin in the wrong place. If you unplug the machine, empty the drum and find it turns freely by hand, you have not fixed anything, but you have ruled out the cheapest explanation and you can say so when you book. On older Hotpoint machines with brushed motors, worn carbon brushes are a recognised and relatively inexpensive cause of exactly this symptom, which is another reason not to assume the worst from the code alone.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Worn motor carbon brushes | On brushed motors these wear down over years and cause intermittent rotation before stopping it entirely. A modest repair if that is what it turns out to be. | Common |
| Drum physically jammed | A bra wire or a coin between the drum and the outer tub. Cheapest possible outcome and the only one you can check yourself. | Occasional |
| Motor or tacho fault | Either the motor itself or the sensor reporting its speed back to the board. The machine cannot tell the difference from the outside. | Occasional |
| Wiring between board and motor | A chafed loom or a corroded connector, often where the harness flexes near the drum. Cheaper than the motor and worth checking before parts are ordered. | Occasional |

What it costs to fix
Typical repair cost
£60–£300
Carbon brushes are typically £60 to £120 fitted. A tacho or wiring repair sits around £90 to £160. A replacement motor is £180 to £300, which is the point at which the machine’s age needs weighing.

Common questions about Hotpoint F02
Can I check anything myself before booking?
One thing, and it is worth doing. Unplug the machine, empty the drum and turn it by hand — it should spin freely and coast. If it grinds or will not move, something is jammed, which is a cheaper and different problem. Mention what you found when you book.
Why does Hotpoint not suggest anything for this code?
Because everything on the list is inside the cabinet. Hotpoint give owner steps for the four codes where something useful can be done from outside, and route the rest to an engineer. It is not a hazard warning, just an honest one.
Are carbon brushes still a thing on modern machines?
Less so. Brushed motors were standard for years and brushes are a wear part on them, but newer machines increasingly use brushless motors where there are no brushes to replace. Which one you have changes the likely repair and the likely price.
How much of the machine has to come apart?
It depends entirely on the cause. Brushes are usually reachable without major dismantling. A motor replacement is a bigger job, and a wiring fault can be anywhere in between. That spread is why the quote follows the diagnosis rather than the code.
