No fan noise at all

The fan is not turning. Either it has seized, or it is not receiving power from the board.

Book an engineer. A Vaillant fan is a stocked part and usually a single visit.

It rattles, drones or grinds, then locks out

Worn bearings. The fan is turning but cannot hold the commanded speed, and it will fail completely soon.

Straightforward fan replacement. Mention the noise when you book — it saves diagnostic time.

The fan sounds completely normal

If the fan is running properly, either the board cannot read its speed or the flue is restricted enough that normal speed cannot be reached.

Ask the engineer to check the flue and the hall sensor before condemning the fan. A flue restriction found early is much cheaper than one found late.

That is very likely your fault. A restricted flue prevents the fan reaching commanded speed and stops combustion being verified.

Do not clear it yourself and do not run the boiler. Flue work is for a Gas Safe registered engineer, who will also check nothing has been drawn further in.

What F.32 means

The fan does two jobs on a condensing boiler: it draws air in for combustion and pushes the products of combustion out through the flue. The control board monitors fan speed continuously through a hall sensor and compares it against what it asked for. F.32 means the two do not match — the fan is running too slow, too fast, or not at all. Because the boiler cannot confirm that flue gases are being cleared properly, it will not allow the burner to fire. This is the correct behaviour and it is why F.32 is not a code to work around. The most common physical cause is simply a fan reaching the end of its life, but a blocked or obstructed flue produces the same reading and carries a different level of risk.

What to try yourself

  1. Go outside and look at the flue terminal where it exits the wall. Check nothing has grown across it, no bird has nested in it, and no fence panel, shed or extension has been built near it since the boiler last worked.

    Look, do not poke. Never push anything into a flue terminal — you can dislodge material further in and make a clearable blockage into an expensive one.
  2. Listen to the boiler on startup. A fan that rattles, drones or grinds before locking out is a fan on the way out, and you can tell the engineer that.

  3. Reset once. If F.32 returns immediately or within a few cycles, leave it locked out and book someone.

How long does a boiler fan last?

Ten to fifteen years is typical, and they usually warn you first. Weeks or months of a rattle or drone on startup is a bearing going. Replacing it before it fails is cheaper than an emergency call-out in January.

What does a Vaillant fan cost to replace?

Could a bird nest really cause this?
