Vaillant S.32 status codewhat it means

Get it checkedBoilerEvery Vaillant with a status display: ecoTEC plus, pro and exclusive, ecoFIT pure, ecoFIT sustain and ecoTEC sustain, the 2005–2012 ecoTEC and turboMAX plus ("heat exchanger antifreeze active"), ecoMAX ("fan unit waiting period"), and the ecoTEC plus CS/1-5 as S.032. S.37, the exclusive's in-operation form, is folded in.Last updated

A protective wait, not a lockout: the fan speed has strayed outside tolerance and the boiler is holding off before it tries to start again. If the wait keeps recurring, F.32 is next.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Vaillant properly.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Vaillant S.32

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What S.32 means

S.32 is the status "Waiting time deviation: fan speed — the waiting period for the fan start-up is activated", or on the ecoFIT pure and ecoTEC sustain "fan waiting time: fan speed outside of the tolerance values". Before every ignition the boiler runs the fan up and compares the speed it reads from the Hall sensor with the speed it asked for.

When the two disagree it does not raise a fault straight away; it waits, lets the fan settle or spin down, and tries again. That pause is S.32, and the 2022 ecoTEC plus describes it as an action rather than a state: S.032, "the fan is restarted due to an excessive deviation in speed". The ecoTEC exclusive splits the idea in two, S.32 for a deviation during start-up and S.37 for a "fan failure in operation", the fan losing speed with the burner already alight; the ecoMAX prints both numbers as "fan unit waiting period". The 2005 to 2012 ecoTEC and the turboMAX plus 837 and 637 give the older reason for the wait: "heat exchanger antifreeze active, as fan speed variation is too high" — the fan is kept turning so that cold air does not sit in the heat exchanger.

If the deviation persists the boiler gives up and locks out on F.32, whose page carries the fan, wiring and blockage causes in full. One S.32 on a cold morning means nothing. S.32 several times a day, or a boiler that spends minutes in it before every burn, is a fan or a flue telling you it is on its way out.

What causes it

Causes of the Vaillant S.32 status code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Fan slow to reach speedWorn bearings or a build-up of dust on the impeller make the fan lag the speed the board demands. Vaillant's F.32 remedies start with the fan itself.Common
Wind or a flue restriction working against the fanA gust down the terminal or a partly blocked flue changes the load on the fan and its speed with it. Gusty days that bring S.32 and calm days that do not point here.Common
Fan connector or Hall sensor leadA poor connection on the fan's signal plug makes the speed reading jump about. The F.32 table lists the plug and the cable harness for this reason.Occasional
Fan losing speed during the burnThe exclusive's S.37. A failing fan motor or a flue being obstructed while the boiler runs; it usually ends in F.32 within the same day.Occasional

Nothing if it is a one-off in wind. A fan checked and cleaned is a call-out of £80 to £120; a replacement fan £220 to £320 fitted.

Common questions about Vaillant S.32

Is S.32 a fault?

No. It is a waiting period the boiler imposes on itself when the fan speed is off. The boiler retries by itself; you do not reset it. F.32 is the fault, raised when the retries fail.

How long does it wait?

Vaillant do not publish the time; in practice it is seconds to a minute or two while the fan settles, after which the boiler tries the start sequence again and, if the speed is right, moves through S.03 to S.04.

What is S.37?

On the ecoTEC exclusive it is the same fan problem happening while the burner is already alight rather than during start-up. The ecoMAX uses both numbers for a "fan unit waiting period". Same family, same remedy.
