Vaillant F.322 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

The heating pump in a 2022 ecoTEC plus has overheated, and running it more gently did not bring the temperature down. Vaillant's remedy is to check and if necessary replace the pump.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Vaillant properly.

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F.322 means

The ecoTEC plus CS/1-5 is the first Vaillant boiler whose pump reports on itself in detail, and F.322 is one of a family of pump codes — F.320 to F.330 — that no two-digit range has. Vaillant print it as "the heating pump has overheated; the temperature could not be lowered by the limp home mode", with the single cause "the pump temporarily reports excessive temperatures in the electronics" and the instruction to check the pump and replace it if required.

Two things in that wording are worth understanding. "Limp home mode" is the CS/1-5's name for running at reduced performance instead of stopping: when the pump first reports a high temperature the boiler eases off and carries on, and F.322 is what appears when easing off did not work. And it is the pump's electronics that are hot, not the water: modulating pumps carry their control electronics in the motor housing and those have a temperature limit of their own. A pump can run hot because it is failing, because it is working far harder than it should against a blocked or restricted circuit, or because the boiler compartment itself is hot.

Vaillant's table names only the pump, so this page keeps the surrounding causes clearly labelled as context rather than as their words. F.320 is the pump blocked, F.321 its electronics defective, F.323 dry running, F.324 its connection interrupted and F.325 a general pump fault; each has its own page or is covered on F.325.

What causes it

Causes of the Vaillant F.322 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Pump electronics overheatingVaillant's stated cause. The control electronics in the pump housing have exceeded their limit repeatedly and the boiler has stopped protecting them by slowing down.Common
Pump working against a restricted circuitSludge, closed valves or a blocked filter make the pump work harder and hotter. Context rather than Vaillant's wording; an engineer checks the system before condemning the pump.Occasional
Hot boiler compartmentA boxed-in boiler or a cupboard with blocked ventilation raises the air temperature around the pump as well as the board, which shows as F.65 on the two-digit ranges.Occasional
Pump failingA worn or seizing pump draws more current and heats its own electronics. Vaillant's remedy: replace the pump.Occasional

Common questions about Vaillant F.322

What is limp home mode?

The CS/1-5's way of carrying on at reduced performance rather than locking out when something is marginal. Several of its codes end "the limp home mode has failed", which means the boiler tried the gentle option first and it was not enough.

Can I reset it?

Once the pump has cooled, a press of longer than three seconds on the reset button will clear it. If the pump heats up again quickly the fault is real and the pump needs an engineer.

Is the pump expensive?

A modulating pump for the CS/1-5 is typically £250 to £320 fitted. If the boiler is inside Vaillant's guarantee, the pump is a part worth claiming rather than paying for.
