Viessmann F1 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Stop — call an engineerBoilerVitodens 100-W WB1B to B1HC/B1KC, 111-W B1LA to B1LD, 050-W BPJD (not WB1A); also Vitotronic-controlled 200-W B2HA/B2HB, 222-F B2TA, 242-F B2UALast updated

Maximum flue gas temperature exceeded. The flue gas sensor has seen the heat exchanger run too hot, almost always because water is not moving through it. Lockout; engineer.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Viessmann F1

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F1 means

F1 is "Burner in a fault state — Max. flue gas temperature exceeded" on the WB1B, WB1C, B1HA/B1KA and B1HC/B1KC, the 111-W B1LA to B1LD and the 050-W BPJD. It is not on the WB1A table, which has no flue gas temperature sensor rows at all. The sensor sits in the flue outlet of the Inox-Radial heat exchanger; if the gas leaving the boiler is hotter than the limit, the heat exchanger is not giving its heat to the water, and the control unit locks the burner out before the heat exchanger or the plastic flue is damaged. Viessmann's measures are exactly the first three of the F2 list — "Check heating system fill level. Check circulation pump. Vent the system. Press Reset." — because a heat exchanger that has stopped transferring heat has almost always stopped being fed with water.

What the householder may do is what the B1HC operating instructions permit for any burner fault: check the pressure gauge is above the 0.8 bar minimum, bleed radiators if there is air, then reset once on the unit's own control — rotary selector to RESET under two seconds on WB1B/WB1C/B1HA, "R" for about two seconds on B1HC, MODE and OK on BPJD — and call the contractor if it recurs. A repeat F1 with a full, vented system is a pump or a heat exchanger that has scaled or sooted on the flue side, and the second of those is a combustion problem, which is why the code keeps its carbon monoxide flag. The Vitotronic-controlled 200-W, 222-F and 242-F have the same F1 — "Flue gas temperature has exceeded limit" in the 2015 B2HA edition, "Flue gas temperature limiter has responded" in the 2019 B2HB — with one extra instruction worth knowing: press reset button R only after the flue system has cooled down. On the 2020-on units with the numeric table the equivalent is F.63 (flue gas temperature limiter has responded), and the B1HG and B1GA editions add F.766/F.767 (flue gas temperature too high).

What causes it

Causes of the Viessmann F1 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Low fill level or air in the systemWater not reaching the top of the heat exchanger. The first and third of Viessmann's measures; the pressure gauge and the radiator bleed screws are where the householder can look.Common
Circulation pump failureA seized or electrically dead pump. Flue gas temperature climbs within a minute of the burner lighting into standing water.Common
Heat exchanger fouled on the flue sideCombustion deposits insulate the heat exchanger so the flue gas leaves hot. A maintenance finding, and a combustion one.Occasional
Flue gas temperature sensor reading highA drifted sensor reports a temperature that is not there. Confirmed by the contractor measuring the actual flue gas temperature at the test point.Rare

Can you fix it yourself?

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£70–£300

Time on site

1h 30m

A flue gas sensor is inexpensive; a pump is not; a heat exchanger clean is a service. Filling and venting alone is a call-out.

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
