Worcester Bosch 2970 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedBoilerGreenstar 8000 Life, 8000 Style and 8000+ combi and system boilers, and the Greenstar 4000 combi, where the text display shows 2970 as a blocking fault; 2968 and 2969 are the intelligent filling system's own messages. Not in the 8000 Life regular, 4000 system or Greenstar 2000 tables, and not possible on the Greenstar i, Compact or CDi Classic.Last updated

The heating system's pressure has dropped too quickly too often. On an 8000 with the intelligent filling loop this usually follows venting after an automatic fill; otherwise it is a leak that needs finding.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Worcester Bosch properly.

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What 2970 means

2970, pressure drop in heating system too rapid, is a blocking fault on the Greenstar 8000 Life, 8000 Style and 8000+ combi and system boilers and on the 4000 combi, and Worcester's own description of it is too many unexpected pressure drops within a short time period. The boiler is watching its pressure sensor continuously, and a system that keeps losing pressure faster than a sealed system should is either leaking or being interfered with.

Worcester's remedy points first at the second. The 8000 range can be fitted with the Greenstar Intelligent Filling System, an accessory that tops the system up automatically to a programmed pressure and logs 2968, refilling system pressure, each time it does; the cause code can appear, the manual says, if the system is pressurised and the intelligent filling loop activated and then the system vented — the fill raises the pressure, the venting drops it sharply, and the boiler counts that as an unexpected loss. The instruction to the engineer is to switch off the intelligent fill in the system menu, re-pressurise manually and vent the system, ensure the correct pressure, and if the code does not clear, power the appliance off.

There is a companion code, 2969, maximum number of refills reached, which is the filling system declining to keep topping up a system that will not hold water. Without the accessory the meaning is plainer: water is leaving, and quickly. The householder's job is to note how fast the pressure falls and where any water is showing; the engineer's is to decide between a venting artefact and a real leak.

What causes it

Causes of the Worcester Bosch 2970 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Venting radiators after an automatic fillWorcester's stated trigger. The intelligent filling loop raises the pressure, bleeding then drops it sharply, and the boiler logs an unexpected loss.Common
A leak on the heating circuitThe plain reading. A weeping valve, a pinhole, a failed radiator, or a pressure relief valve that is passing to the outside pipe.Common
Expansion vessel lost its chargePressure that climbs when hot and falls fast when cooling is the vessel, and it makes the filling system top up when it should not.Occasional
Pressure sensor misreadingIf the sensor itself is unstable the boiler sees drops that are not there. Worcester file the sensor under 1065.Rare

Common questions about Worcester Bosch 2970

What is the intelligent filling loop?

An optional accessory on the 8000 range that refills the heating system automatically to a pressure the installer programmes. It logs 2968 when it fills and 2969 when it has filled as many times as it is allowed to.

I do not have the filling accessory. What does 2970 mean then?

That the pressure is dropping faster than a sealed system should, repeatedly. That is a leak, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge, and it wants finding.

Is this the same as 1017 or 2971?

No. Those are the pressure being low. 2970 is the pressure falling quickly and often, which can happen from a normal reading.
