Samsung OF OF fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedFridge or freezerLast updated

Cooling Off or Demo Mode. On many Samsung ranges unplugging does not clear it, and Samsung publish which, so a fridge still warm after a power cycle has not been diagnosed.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified refrigeration engineer to look at the Samsung properly.

What OF OF means

Samsung describe this mode in their own words as one which disables the cooling function while keeping the lights and display active, useful in retail settings, and note that if it is accidentally enabled at home your fridge will not cool. The display string varies even across Samsung's own two UK support pages: their fridge-not-cooling article writes it as OF-OF and their power cut article writes OF OF and O FF. Take the characters loosely — any of those, on a fridge that is lit and warm, points here. The single most important thing to know is what a power cycle does and does not prove. On an LG, shop mode clears with a ten second power cycle and LG publish that. On a Samsung it depends on the range, and Samsung publish a table saying which, though not on the UK site. Their per-model table says the mode remains in exhibition mode even when the power is off and on again on the RF265, RF266 and RF267 French door models, the RS263 to RS269 and RS2530B side-by-sides and the RSG range; and that in case of power off it will be dismissed on the RS2630, RM25, RS2544 and RS2545, RSH and RSJ, RL38, RL41 and RL44, RSA, RB194 to RB217 and RL62 ranges.

So an owner who has read generic advice, unplugged the fridge overnight, plugged it back in and found it still at room temperature has not shown the compressor has failed — on the first group that is exactly what the mode does — and an owner on the second group may find the power cycle was the whole fix. Either way the reliable exit is the button combination, and Samsung hedge on it in a way worth respecting rather than papering over. Their UK web article says to hold Energy Saver and Power Freeze for three seconds and listen for a chime. Their own RS4000D manual gives the equivalent procedure as a six second hold of two buttons, then a third press when the display blinks. Their model table gives three seconds for most of the RF and RS26x ranges, five seconds for the RB and RL62 ranges, and eight seconds for the RS2630, RM25, RSG, RSH, RSJ, RL38 to RL44 and RSA ranges, with the pair usually Power Freeze and the freezer temperature button. Their US article adds the fallback: if two buttons held until the chime do not change the display, hold the first, second and fourth buttons together until it chimes.

Samsung themselves say the process varies by model and direct owners to their own manual, so there is no universal answer, and a sequence that does nothing does not mean the fridge is broken; Samsung say plainly that service is not required for Cooling Off mode. There is one more trap on current side-by-sides. O FF also appears for a few seconds after a ten second button hold that turns Wi-Fi off, which is completely unrelated. The distinguisher is behaviour rather than the characters: Cooling Off persists and the fridge stays warm, while the Wi-Fi message shows for about five seconds and the fridge carries on cooling normally. Samsung's manual describes the mode from the owner's side in a phrase that matches what people actually observe better than the words demo mode do: lighting, control panel, ice maker, water and ice dispenser do not operate simultaneously.

What to try yourself

  1. Confirm the pattern: display lit, light on, buttons responding, and the appliance at room temperature. Samsung describe the symptom as lighting, control panel, ice maker and dispenser not operating simultaneously.

  2. Do not judge it by unplugging. On the RF and RS26x side-by-sides and several other ranges Samsung say Cooling Off survives a power cycle, so a fridge that comes back warm has told you nothing either way. On the RL, RB and RSA fridge freezers Samsung say power off dismisses it, so if yours came back cold, that was the fix.

  3. Hold Energy Saver and Power Freeze together for three seconds and listen for a chime. That is Samsung’s published UK web instruction, and the pair on most models is Power Freeze with the freezer temperature button.

  4. If nothing happens, hold longer: Samsung’s own documents give six seconds on the RS4000D and the Bespoke ranges, five seconds on the RB and RL62 ranges, and eight seconds on the RSG, RSH, RSJ, RL38 to RL44 and RSA ranges. Hold until it chimes.

  5. If two buttons do nothing, try Samsung’s three-button fallback: the first, second and fourth buttons together until the chime. If your model has a different pair, use its manual — Samsung say explicitly that the combination varies.

  6. Give it several hours to pull down before deciding whether it worked. A fridge that has sat at room temperature does not get cold in ten minutes and the freezer takes longer than the fridge.

Get a qualified refrigeration engineer to look at your Samsung OF OF

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified refrigeration engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Nothing. This is a mode with a button exit. The only cost is the engineer visit somebody books for a working fridge because unplugging it did not fix it.

Common questions about Samsung OF OF

I unplugged it overnight and it is still warm.

That does not rule this out on a Samsung. Their own model table says the mode remains even when the power is off and on again on the RF265 to RF267, RS263 to RS269, RS2530B and RSG ranges, which is the opposite of the LG behaviour that most generic advice is written from. You need the button sequence. On the RL, RB, RSA, RSH and RSJ ranges Samsung say power off dismisses the mode, so a fridge in that group that is still warm after a night unplugged probably has a different problem.

Three seconds, five, six or eight?

Samsung publish all four, for different ranges. Three seconds is their UK web article and their figure for the RF and RS26x ranges; five is the RB194 to RB217 and RL62 ranges; six is the RS4000D manual and the Bespoke procedure of holding the left and right arrows then pressing the centre button; eight is the RS2630, RM25, RSG, RSH, RSJ, RL38 to RL44 and RSA ranges. Hold until you hear the chime rather than counting. They also state that the combination itself varies by model, so if none of these works your manual is the authority — and Samsung say service is not required for this mode.

I saw O FF but the fridge is cold. Is it in demo mode?

Probably not. On current side-by-sides, O FF also appears for about five seconds after a ten second button hold that turns Wi-Fi off. Cooling Off persists and leaves the fridge warm; the Wi-Fi message is brief and the fridge keeps cooling.
