Daikin Ice on the outdoor unitwhat to check
Normal in cold damp weather, and the unit clears it itself. Daikin specifically forbid helping — no hot water, no de-icer, no scraping.
Take care
What this means
Frost on the fins of an outdoor unit in cold damp weather is expected, and every manufacturer in this category says so. The evaporator has to sit colder than the outside air to take heat from it, so in the right conditions the moisture in that air freezes onto it. The unit detects the frost and clears it by briefly reversing the refrigeration circuit, which is why you sometimes see a cloud of vapour rising off it, hear the note change, and find the radiators going cool for a few minutes mid-cycle. All four of those are the same thing happening. The part that matters, and the reason this is a caution rather than an information page, is what you must not do about it.
Daikin publish the instruction in their own safety wording: do not use cleaning materials or means to accelerate the defrosting process other than those recommended by the manufacturer. Concretely that rules out the four things people reach for — a kettle of hot water, a heat gun, de-icer spray, and a screwdriver or scraper. They also publish the reason it is not merely bad practice: do not pierce or burn refrigerant cycle parts. The fins have refrigerant pipework running through them, the newer Altherma monoblocs are charged with R32 which Daikin label as mildly flammable, and a scraper that goes through a fin can reach it.
Daikin add a detail that changes how you would notice a leak: the refrigerant is odourless, and does not contain an added odour the way domestic gas does. So the smell test that works on a boiler does not work here. What is legitimately yours is the space around the unit. Keeping snow, leaves and vegetation away from the coil and the airflow path is published owner maintenance, as is making sure condensate and rainwater can drain away freely — because meltwater that cannot escape refreezes under the unit and builds up over a cold week into something that genuinely does block it.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary frosting in cold damp weather | Below about 5 degrees, condensation on the evaporator fins freezes. The unit detects it and thaws it automatically at intervals. Nothing is wrong. | Common |
| Blocked airflow around the unit | Leaves, snow drifted against the coil, or vegetation grown up around it all reduce the air the unit can work with and make frosting worse than it should be. | Common |
| Meltwater that cannot drain away | Defrost water has to get away from the unit. If the drain path is blocked or the base tray sits in a puddle, it refreezes and accumulates into a block of ice over several cold days. | Occasional |
| A defrost cycle not completing | Thawing takes heat from the heating circuit, so it needs a minimum volume of water in the system to work. If the unit is icing up progressively over days rather than clearing each cycle, that is a fault and it needs an engineer. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Watch it for a full cycle before doing anything. A unit that frosts and then clears itself, with vapour coming off it as it does, is working exactly as designed.
Clear snow, leaves and anything growing around the unit, keeping well away from the fins themselves. Air has to reach the coil and get away from it.
Check that meltwater can drain away from underneath. A blocked drain path turns one night of frost into a week of accumulating ice.
Do not pour hot water on it, use de-icer, aim a heat gun at it, or scrape the fins.
Daikin publish this as a safety instruction, not a preference: do not use means to accelerate the defrosting process other than those recommended by the manufacturer, and do not pierce or burn refrigerant cycle parts. The fins carry refrigerant pipework, newer units are charged with R32 which Daikin label mildly flammable, and the refrigerant is odourless so a leak gives you no warning smell. If the ice builds up day after day instead of clearing each cycle, call your installer. Progressive icing is a fault, and it is one that gets worse rather than better.
Get an F-Gas certified heat pump engineer to look at your Daikin heat pump
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book an F-Gas certified heat pump engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Nothing at all for a unit that frosts and clears itself, which is most of them. An engineer visit if the ice builds progressively, because that points at the defrost cycle or the system volume rather than the weather.

Common questions
There is steam pouring off the unit. Is it on fire?
No. That is the defrost cycle and it is the most alarming-looking normal behaviour a heat pump has. Vaillant put it plainly in their own manual: if you observe a cloud of vapour on the product, you do not have to do anything, as this effect may arise during the thawing process.
Why do my radiators go cool while it is defrosting?
Because that is where the heat for the defrost comes from. The unit reverses the refrigeration circuit and takes the energy it needs out of the heating installation, so for a few minutes the house is paying for the thaw. It is normal and it is brief.
Can I pour warm water over it just once?
No. Daikin’s instruction covers exactly this, and the reason is that the fins have refrigerant pipework through them and the newer units are charged with a mildly flammable refrigerant. Thermal shock and physical damage are both real risks, and a leak would not smell of anything.
