Miele Close the doorwhat it means

Usually simple to fixMicrowaveMiele microwave ovens. Published by Miele as part of normal operation, in the section on interrupting and restarting a programme. The manual read is the UK operating instructions for the M 7244 TC built-in (M.-Nr. 12 630 630); other Miele microwaves are assumed to behave the same only where their own instruction book says so.Last updated

A programme has been interrupted because the door opened. Miele publish it as normal operation, and the countdown resumes rather than restarting.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the microwave. Whatever the fault turns out to be, leave the outer casing alone. A microwave holds a high-voltage capacitor that stays charged after the plug is out, so unplugging it does not make the inside of it safe.

What this means

Miele put this on the display whenever a running programme is interrupted by the door being opened, and their documentation treats it as normal operation rather than as a problem. Their text is that at any time you can interrupt a programme by opening the appliance door, at which point "the duration stops counting down" and "Close the door appears in the display"; you continue by closing the door and touching the start control, and the programme picks up from where it stopped. That is worth a page for two reasons, and neither of them is that the instruction is hard to follow.

The first is that people meet this message without having deliberately interrupted anything. A door that has drifted off its catch, one nudged while you reached past the appliance, or one that never quite latched when you closed it will all produce it, and the appliance sitting there with a stopped countdown looks like a fault rather than a pause. The second is what the message tells you about how a microwave is built. It is not a courtesy prompt. A microwave door is a radiation shield, and the standard these appliances are built to, BS EN IEC 60335-2-25, defines a monitored door interlock as a "door interlock system that incorporates a supervision device"; Whirlpool’s service documentation describes the arrangement as primary and secondary switches with a monitor switch across them.

Opening the door does not stop the programme by asking the software nicely; it opens switches that physically interrupt the power. The message is the appliance reporting a state it has already been forced into. Which is also why the message will not clear by pressing buttons: the switches have to change state, and that means the door genuinely closing. If Close the door persists on a door that looks and feels shut, the door is not shutting as far as the appliance is concerned, and that is a mechanical matter rather than a message to dismiss.

What causes it

Causes of Miele Close the door, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Door opened deliberately mid-programmeStirring or turning food part-way through is the normal case, and Miele document the pause as intended behaviour.Common
Door not pushed fully homeA soft close satisfies some interlocks and not others, and the appliance treats a partial answer as open.Common
Door knocked or drifted off its catchReaching past the appliance or a knock to the worktop is enough to break the switch contact.Occasional
Debris on the sealing face or frameDried spatter on the frame holds the door fractionally proud, so it stops just short of latching.Occasional
Hinge, catch or interlock switch wornThe message stays on a door that looks shut, which is a mechanical fault rather than a prompt.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Close the door properly — firm and square rather than a swing — and touch the start control. Miele say the programme continues from where it stopped, so nothing is lost.

  2. If the message stays, open the door fully and take everything out, including the turntable and its support.

  3. Look along the frame where the door meets the body, and along the door edge. Anything raised — dried spatter, a crumb, a label — will hold it open enough to matter.

  4. Wipe the frame and the door edge with a damp cloth and dry them, then close the door again and see whether the message goes.

  5. If it persists on a clean empty appliance with the door firmly shut, book a repair. A hinge, catch or interlock switch is behind the cover and Miele’s own position is that repairs are for their technicians.

Never hold, tape or wedge the door to make a programme run. Those switches are the radiation containment, and they are the only reason the microwaves stay inside the cavity.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele microwave

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£150

Time on site

10 minutes

Nothing when the door simply needs closing, which is nearly always. A hinge, catch or interlock switch fitted runs about £80 to £150, most of which is the visit.

Typical UK prices including parts and labour, updated September 2026. Your quote may differ.

Common questions

Do I lose the cooking time?

No. Miele are explicit that the duration stops counting down rather than resetting, and that closing the door and touching start continues the programme. You resume rather than begin again.

The door looks shut and the message will not go.

Then it is not shut as far as the interlock switches are concerned, and no amount of button pressing will change that. Clean the frame and the door edge first, and if it still will not clear, the door needs looking at mechanically.

Why can I not just press start again?

Because the interruption is not a software state. Opening the door opens switches that break the power circuit, and the appliance is reporting something already true. The switches have to close, which means the door has to close.

Miele say to check the door seal for damage. What am I looking for?

Cracks, distortion, burn marks or arcing damage on the seal and the surfaces it meets. Their instruction is unambiguous: if any damage is noticed, the oven should not be used again in microwave mode until a service technician has rectified it.
