Miele Food in oven?what it means

Usually simple to fixMicrowaveMiele microwave ovens with the food prompt, which Miele list in the settings as Query food (On by default, Off available). Published by Miele in their UK microwave operating instructions with the trigger conditions stated. The manual read is the UK operating instructions for the M 7244 TC built-in (M.-Nr. 12 630 630); other Miele microwaves are assumed to behave the same only where their own instruction book says so.Last updated

A deliberate guard, not a fault. Miele will not start a programme it believes has no food in it, and they publish the exact trigger.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the microwave. Whatever the fault turns out to be, leave the outer casing alone. A microwave holds a high-voltage capacitor that stays charged after the plug is out, so unplugging it does not make the inside of it safe.

What this means

This is the best piece of manufacturer documentation in the whole microwave category, and it is a prompt rather than a problem. Miele call it the food prompt, and their explanation is that it "is a reminder that the appliance should not be used without food inside it", because "operating the appliance without food can damage the appliance". The trigger logic is published in full, which almost nothing else in this category is: if a cooking programme is started without the door having first been opened, the prompt appears; and the reason it appears is that "there is no food inside the appliance because the door has not been opened for a long time (approx. 20 minutes)".

The programme then only starts after you confirm with OK, or after you open the door. Read that again and you can see exactly what the appliance is reasoning. It has no way to detect food. What it can detect is whether anybody has opened the door since the last time it cooked, because food arrives through the door. Twenty minutes of a closed door followed by somebody pressing start is a pattern that means either you have put something in and it has been sitting there a while, or the cavity is empty and a start command has been given by accident, by a child, or by a hand leaning on the panel.

Miele cannot distinguish those, so they ask. What makes this worth a page is why the question is worth asking at all. A microwave works by pushing energy into water in food. With nothing to absorb it, the energy reflects around the cavity and back into the magnetron, which then has to dissipate the power it just generated. That is the one thing an owner can do that reliably shortens a magnetron’s life, every manufacturer in this category warns about it, and Miele are the only one who built a guard.

What causes it

Causes of Miele Food in oven?, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Start pressed without the door having been openedMiele’s published trigger. Setting a programme again after a long gap without opening the door produces the prompt.Common
The cavity genuinely is emptyThe case the guard exists for. Somebody has set a programme with nothing inside, which is what damages the magnetron.Common
A start command pressed accidentallyA child at the fascia, or a hand leaning on the panel while reaching past, presses start on an empty appliance.Occasional
A programme reset after a long pauseFood loaded, then interrupted for twenty minutes with the door shut, then restarted without reopening it.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Look inside before you dismiss it. The prompt is right often enough that checking is the point of it.

  2. If there is food in there, press OK. Miele are explicit that confirming with OK starts the programme.

  3. Alternatively, open the door and close it again. That satisfies the condition directly, because the appliance is watching for the door rather than for the food.

  4. If the cavity is empty, do not confirm. Cancel and load it first — the prompt has just done its job and saved you a magnetron.

Never run a microwave empty or with only a very small item in it, whatever the brand. The energy has nowhere to go but back into the magnetron, and it is the one owner action that reliably shortens its life.
  5. If you get the prompt every single time on a loaded appliance, note whether you are opening the door as part of loading. If you are and it still appears, that is worth mentioning to Miele. The prompt can be switched off under Settings, Query food, but Miele default it to On for the reason above.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele microwave

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Common questions

Is something wrong with the appliance?

No. It is a designed prompt with published logic behind it, and it appears on a working microwave doing exactly what Miele built it to do. Confirming with OK or opening the door clears it.

Why twenty minutes?

Miele give the figure and not the reasoning, but it is long enough that a normal load-and-cook never triggers it and short enough to catch a start command on a cavity nobody has opened in a while. It is a threshold rather than a timer counting anything down.

What actually happens if you run one empty?

The energy is not absorbed, so it reflects back into the magnetron, which has to dissipate the power it produced. Once may do nothing measurable. Repeatedly, or for long periods, shortens its life, and a failed magnetron is the most expensive single repair on a microwave.

Do other brands do this?

They warn about it in the manual. Miele are the only brand in this category we found with an appliance that intervenes. If you have used a microwave that just runs whatever is or is not inside it, this prompt is a feature you have not met before.

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
