What CE means
CE is the most serious code LG publish, and their own description says why: an over-current in the electrical circuit of the motor, caused by a short circuit, a loose connection, a ground fault or a power surge. Every one of those is an electrical fault rather than a mechanical one, and a ground fault in particular means current is finding a path it should not have. LG’s instruction is unusually direct for a manufacturer. Where most brands say "contact service", LG tell the owner what to do first: if the CE error persists, close the water tap and unplug the washer, and the unit will require a repair service. Note the order — water off as well as power off, because the machine is being taken out of use rather than merely paused. That is worth acting on immediately. This is not a code to reset and run again to see whether it comes back, and it is emphatically not one to keep resetting. An over-current condition in a cabinet that also holds standing water is the one combination on a washing machine that genuinely warrants stopping. Common questions about LG CE
What should I do straight away?
What LG say: close the water tap, unplug the washer at the socket, and arrange a repair. Do not keep restarting it to see whether it clears. If you can smell burning or hot plastic, leave it unplugged and do not run it again under any circumstances.
Why turn the water off for an electrical fault?
Because the machine is going out of use until it is repaired, and an unattended machine with the tap open is a flood risk regardless of what is wrong with it. LG give both instructions together for that reason.
My RCD keeps tripping as well. Are the two connected?
Quite possibly. LG list a ground fault among the causes of CE, and current leaking to earth is exactly what an RCD is built to detect. If the machine trips the consumer unit, stop using it and say so when you book — it is a useful and important detail.
Can it be a plug or socket problem rather than the machine?
It can contribute. LG advise elsewhere that these machines should be plugged directly into a wall outlet and not through a power strip. Sort that out if it applies, but do not treat it as the whole answer to a persistent CE.
Is this worth repairing?
Get the diagnosis first. A loose connection or a wiring repair is modest. If it turns out to be the motor circuit, the Direct Drive parts warranty may cover the component on a machine under ten years old even though the labour will not be.
