LG OE fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
The machine could not drain the water it used. LG point at the drain filter and the drain hose, and both are owner-accessible.
Take care
What OE means
LG use OE when the machine is unable to drain the water used during the wash cycle. It is the most looked-up code on the brand, and LG’s own UK guidance is refreshingly short: check whether the drainage filter is clogged or the drainage hose is bent. There is a detail specific to LG worth knowing before you start. The drain filter sits behind a small hatch at the bottom front, and on most LG models there is a short capped hose tucked in beside it whose only job is to let you empty the drum before you unscrew anything. People who miss it unscrew the filter on a full machine and put fifteen litres across the kitchen floor. There is a second LG-specific trap. Because the machine cannot drain, it also cannot release the door — the interlock holds while the water is above the glass. That combination sends people looking for a door fault when what they have is a drain fault, and the code is telling them so.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Drain filter clogged | Named first in LG’s own guidance. A deliberate trap for coins, buttons and bra wires, meant to be cleaned by the owner every few months. | Common |
| Drain hose bent or kinked | LG name this too. Almost always caused by the machine being pushed back too hard against the hose. | Common |
| Standpipe or sink trap blocked | A shared kitchen waste silted with grease. The machine is fine; the plumbing is not. Suspect it if the sink drains slowly. | Occasional |
| Drain pump failed | The pump itself, once the filter and hose are proven clear. Usually preceded by weeks of noisier than normal draining. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Switch off and unplug at the socket, then put towels down. There is more water in there than you think and all of it is coming out.
Open the hatch at the bottom front. Before touching the filter, find the small capped hose beside it, pull it out and drain the machine into a shallow tray — several trayfuls, patiently.
If the cycle stopped at temperature the water can still scald. Give it an hour if the machine aborted a hot wash.Unscrew the filter anticlockwise, clear it out, and check the impeller behind it spins freely by hand.
Refit the filter firmly and close the hatch. A filter left a half turn loose leaks steadily on the next cycle.
Pull the machine out and straighten the drain hose along its full run, then start a rinse and spin to confirm it clears.

What it costs to fix
Typical repair cost
£0–£170

Usually nothing at all. A replacement drain pump is around £100 to £170 fitted. LG parts are readily available and this is not an unusual repair.

What other owners found
Nobody has shared what worked for them on this code yet. If you have had it, you would be the first — and it genuinely helps the next person.

Common questions about LG OE
The door is locked shut with water inside. How do I open it?
Drain it first through the small capped hose behind the filter hatch. The door stays locked while water is above the level of the glass, which is deliberate. Once the drum is empty the lock will normally release.
Is OE the same as an OE with a number after it?
LG use OE for the drain error across the range. If your display shows something longer, write down exactly what it says including any digits, because the extra characters narrow the fault for whoever you call.
The filter was clean. What next?
Then the restriction is further along — the hose, the standpipe or the household waste — or the pump has failed. Check the hose and the sink trap first, because both are free.
