What UE means
LG describe UE as an unbalance error, occurring when the laundry is piled up on one side of the drum. They also name two conditions people rarely consider: a load that is too small as well as one that is too large, and a machine that is not level. The too-small case surprises people. A single item has nothing to balance against, so a machine washing one towel can fail the check as reliably as one crammed to the door. Before every spin the machine tumbles the load and measures the distribution, and if the weight is off-centre it declines to accelerate. At 1400 revolutions a minute an unbalanced drum generates enough force to move the whole cabinet and to wear out the bearings early, so the refusal is protecting the most expensive part of the machine. Note there is no LG fault code for a worn bearing. Bearing wear announces itself as noise — a rumble or grinding that rises with spin speed — not as a code, so if that is your actual symptom this is not the page you need.

What to try yourself
Open the door and pull the washing apart by hand. It comes out of a failed spin knotted into a lump, and restarting without separating it produces the same result.
Spread it evenly around the drum. If you are washing one big item, add two or three towels — and if you are washing only one or two items, add more, because LG list too small a load as a cause in its own right.
Run a spin-only cycle. There is no need to wash anything again.
If it is happening on ordinary loads, check the machine is level by pushing down on each corner. Any rock means the feet need adjusting and their lock nuts tightening against the body.

Is UE a fault?
No. It is the balance check working as designed. LG describe it as the laundry being piled on one side of the drum, and the answer is to redistribute and spin again.
Why does it happen when I wash just one thing?
Because one item has nothing to balance against. LG list a load that is too small alongside one that is too large as a cause. Add a couple of towels and the problem goes away.
My machine also rumbles loudly on spin. Is that related?
Possibly, but not through this code. Noise that rises with spin speed points at drum bearings, and LG publish no fault code for bearing wear — it presents as sound rather than as a code. If the noise is new and getting worse, get it looked at on its own merits.
When does UE stop being normal?
When it happens on ordinary mixed loads that used to spin without trouble. At that point look at levelling first, then at worn suspension on an older machine.
