What dE means
LG describe dE as indicating that the washer door was unable to lock. The drum cannot turn until the interlock confirms a locked door, so the machine stops before it starts rather than part way through — which is a useful distinction when you are working out what happened. Most of the time the door genuinely has not latched. A sleeve caught in the seal, a duvet pressed against the glass or a drum packed past the point where the door can close squarely will each hold it a few millimetres open, and a few millimetres is all it takes for the catch to miss. LG also publish dE1 and dE2 as separate codes with their own diagnostic paths, so the digit after the letters is not decoration. Write down exactly what the display shows. A plain dE and a dE2 will send an engineer to different places, and quoting the wrong one is a good way to end up with two visits.

What to try yourself
Open the door fully and run a finger all the way round the seal, checking between the rubber and the glass for trapped fabric.
If the drum is full, take a third out and try again. An overloaded machine cannot close its door squarely however firmly it is pushed.
Close the door deliberately until you hear the catch click, lifting very slightly as you push if the machine is old enough for the hinge to have dropped.
Note the exact code, including any digit after the letters. LG treat dE, dE1 and dE2 as separate faults with different diagnostic routes.
Unplug at the socket for a minute and try once more. If the door is genuinely shut and the code stands, the interlock has failed and needs replacing.

Common questions about LG dE
The door is definitely closed. Why does it say dE?
Because the machine reads the interlock, not the door. When the interlock fails it reports an unlocked door on a door that is shut and latched perfectly. Once you have ruled out the seal and the load, that is what has happened.
Is dE2 the same fault?
No. LG publish dE, dE1 and dE2 as separate codes with separate troubleshooting. The extra character changes the diagnosis, so quote what your display actually shows rather than rounding it to dE.
Can I run the machine with the door problem?
No, and that is by design. The interlock is what stops the drum turning with the door open, so the machine will not run at all until it is satisfied.
