LG uS fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
The vibration sensor has failed. LG give two words of remedy — call for service — and the display makes the code itself hard to read.
Take care
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your LG uS
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.
What uS means
uS is VIBRATION SENSOR ERROR and LG’s published remedy is the shortest in their table: call for service. There is nothing else offered, no cause list beyond the sensor malfunctioning, and no owner step. Before anything else, be sure of what you are reading, because this is the LG code most often mis-transcribed.
On a seven-segment display a lower-case u and a v are near-indistinguishable, and the letter S renders almost identically to the digit 5. LG’s own material outside the UK writes the same fault as uS, vS and u5 in different places, which tells you they know. If you have a code that looks like v5 or u5 or vS, this is the page. What the sensor does explains why LG will not let you near it. A modern washing machine reaches 1400 revolutions a minute, and before it gets there it measures how the load is distributed and how much the cabinet is moving. That measurement is what stops the machine walking across the floor and what protects the drum bearings from an off-centre load.
When the machine cannot trust the measurement it will not spin hard, so the practical symptom is usually wet washing rather than anything dramatic. Note how this differs from the unbalance code, which is the same system working correctly and telling you to redistribute the load.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Vibration sensor failed | What LG name, and the whole of what they publish. The sensor reports cabinet movement to the board, and it either reports or it does not. | Common |
| Wiring or connector to the sensor | The cheapest outcome. The sensor lives near a part designed to move, so its connections take more punishment than most. | Occasional |
| Board input stage | A working sensor the board cannot read. Distinguished by substituting a known-good part rather than by inspection. | Rare |

What it costs to fix
Typical repair cost
£90–£200
A sensor is not an expensive part, so most of a £90 to £200 bill is the visit. A wiring fault found on the same visit costs the call-out and nothing more.
Typical UK prices including parts and labour, updated September 2026. Your quote may differ.

Related LG fault codes
- UEUsually simple to fixThe load is heaped on one side of the drum. LG describe it as laundry piled to one side, and it is normal behaviour rather than a breakdown.Related: drum balance and spin
- OEGet it checkedThe machine could not drain the water it used. LG point at the drain filter and the drain hose, and both are owner-accessible.Related: same brand
- IEGet it checkedThe drum did not fill to the level it wanted in the time allowed. LG treat IE and 1E as the same code, so you do not need to tell them apart.Related: same brand
- LEGet it checkedThe drum failed to turn. LG name overloading and a foreign object first — and if it is the motor, the ten-year warranty may cover the part but not the labour.Related: same brand
- FEGet it checkedLG publish two different answers for FE. Their manual says close the tap and call an engineer; their UK website says clean the filter and change detergent.Related: same brand
- dEGet it checkedLG call this a door error and mean the door sensor. It is one of nine codes where their own manual answer is to ring the service centre.Related: same brand

Common questions about LG uS
My display shows something like u5 or vS. Is that this code?
Almost certainly. Seven-segment displays render lower-case u and v nearly identically and make S and 5 hard to separate, and LG’s own material outside the UK writes this fault as uS, vS and u5 in different documents. It is one code with several renderings, not several codes.
Is there anything to try before I ring?
The UK manual offers nothing. LG’s global list treats the first appearance as a pause: press Start/Pause to resume, and if the code comes straight back, switch the machine off and on again once. If it survives that, the sensor needs inspecting, which is where the UK manual started.
How is this different from the unbalance code?
The unbalance code is the sensing system working: it has measured an off-centre load and is asking you to redistribute it, and LG give you a real owner remedy for it. uS is the sensing itself having failed, so the machine has no measurement to act on. One is a laundry problem and the other is a part.
Can I keep using the machine?
It will generally still wash, and the symptom you notice is washing that comes out wetter than it should because the machine will not commit to a full spin without trustworthy vibration data. That is liveable for a few days but it is not a state to settle into, both for the laundry and because a machine that spins hard without that check is the thing the sensor exists to prevent.
Is the machine going to damage itself?
Not while it is refusing to spin, which is the safe behaviour. The risk would be the other way round — a machine spinning a badly distributed load at full speed puts real force through the drum bearings and can move the cabinet. The code is the protection announcing that it cannot do its job.
