Samsung PC fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedWashing machineSamsung washing machines with a clutch-driven driveLast updated

The machine cannot find the position of its clutch. Samsung give no home remedy for this one at all — their instruction is to call the service centre.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Samsung properly.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Samsung PC

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What PC means

PC and PE mean the clutch position was not detected. PC1 and PE1 mean something more specific and worth distinguishing: the clutch was detected, but the hall signal from it is malfunctioning. The clutch is the mechanism that decides whether the motor turns the drum for a wash or drives it for a spin, and a hall sensor is a small magnetic position detector that tells the board which state it is actually in.

Samsung’s remedy column for all four strings says one thing — contact the Samsung Service Centre. That is notable in a table where roughly nine in ten published codes carry something the owner can try, and it is the same treatment they give the failed heating element. Take it as written. A machine that does not know whether its drum is clutched for wash or spin should not be asked to try again, because the mechanism is between a substantial motor and a drum that can hold twenty kilos of wet laundry.

There is nothing accessible from outside the machine either: no filter, no hose, no reachable connector. The one thing worth doing before the engineer arrives is separating PC from PC1, because the two point at different parts and the distinction saves diagnostic time.

What causes it

Causes of the Samsung PC fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Hall position sensor failedThe likely answer on PC1 and PE1 specifically, where Samsung state the clutch was detected but its hall signal is malfunctioning. A sensor rather than the mechanism.Common
Clutch actuator not movingThe mechanism has stuck or its drive has failed, so it never reaches a position the board recognises. Matches the plain PC and PE reading.Occasional
Wiring or connector to the clutch assemblyA harness in a part of the machine that moves and vibrates hard. Cheapest of the outcomes and worth asking to be checked before parts are ordered.Occasional
Control board not reading the position inputDiagnosed last. On a machine past eight or nine years old this is usually the point at which replacement becomes the sensible answer.Rare

Can you fix it yourself?

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£120–£320

A hall position sensor or harness repair is £120 to £190. A clutch assembly fitted runs to £250 to £320, which on an older machine is worth weighing against replacement.

Common questions about Samsung PC

Why is there nothing I can try?

Because there is genuinely nothing accessible. The clutch and its sensor sit behind the drum, on the drive side of the machine, and Samsung’s table gives remedies wherever remedies exist. For this code it says only to contact the service centre, which is the same treatment they give a failed heating element.

Can I use the machine on a wash-only cycle?

It is not worth trying. The clutch is what selects wash from spin, so the machine cannot reliably give you either. Running a mechanism it cannot position, with a heavy wet load in the drum, risks turning a sensor replacement into a drum and bearing job.

What is the difference between PC and PC1?

Samsung publish the distinction explicitly. PC and PE mean the clutch position was not detected at all. PC1 and PE1 mean it was detected but the hall signal from it is malfunctioning — so the mechanism is probably moving and the sensor reading it is not. Quote whichever your machine shows when you book the repair.

Is it economic to repair?

It depends what is found and how old the machine is. A sensor or a harness is a moderate bill. A clutch assembly on a machine approaching a decade old often comes to enough that a new machine with a warranty is the better spend. Ask for the diagnosis and the quote separately before committing.
