What EF3 means
EF3 means a water leak has been detected and an automatic safety mode has been activated — the Aqua Control system has triggered. The manufacturer’s instruction is to turn off the water supply to the machine. It is important to separate EF3 from EF0, because they share the fifteen-beep signal and a great many guides run them together. EF0 is a mixed group covering three quite different things: a water leak, over-foaming, or an unbalanced load. So an EF0 might mean nothing worse than too much detergent. EF3 is the specific one, and it says a leak has actually been detected. If your machine is showing EF3, do not let a guide about EF0 talk you into assuming it is foam. What the Aqua Control system does is contain a leak before it reaches your floor, which is why the absence of visible water is not reassurance. A dry kitchen means the protection is working, not that nothing is wrong, and resetting the machine to get one more cycle out of it overrides the only thing currently holding the situation. Turn the tap off behind the machine, switch it off at the wall and unplug it, then get somebody to look at it.

Common questions about Zanussi EF3
What is the difference between EF0 and EF3?
EF0 is a group covering three unrelated things — a leak, over-foaming, or an unbalanced load — so it might be nothing more than too much detergent. EF3 is specifically a detected water leak with the Aqua Control safety mode activated. They share the fifteen-beep signal, which is why guides blur them, but they do not warrant the same response.
What do I do first?
Turn off the water supply to the machine, which is the manufacturer’s own instruction, then switch it off at the wall and unplug it. Leave it there and book someone.
There is no water on the floor, so is it a false alarm?
Not necessarily, and this is the most misunderstood part. Aqua Control is designed to catch a leak inside the machine before it reaches your kitchen. A dry floor means the system is doing what it was built for.
Can I drain the base and carry on?
No. That trick circulates widely and it disables the protection without touching the leak. You would be running a machine that is leaking internally, with the sensor emptied so it cannot warn you a second time.
Could too much detergent set it off?
Heavy foaming can overflow the tub and reach the base, which is exactly why the manufacturer bundles foam into the EF0 group. Mention it if you have had a foaming problem, but it does not change what to do about an EF3 today.
