Baxi E.04.13 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Stop — call an engineerBoilerTwo alternating pairs, E04 then 13 (and E01 then 11 for incorrect fan speed), on the Baxi 200 and 400 Combi of 2016–2023. Dotted E.04.13 on the 200, 400, 600 and 800 Combi 2, 600 and 800 System 2 and Assure 500 from 2023. Three-digit Baxis show E160.Last updated

Fan blocked or over speed on the Baxi 200/400 Combi and Combi 2. Baxi's remedy is the fan-and-PCB connection, then the air-gas unit. No householder fix; do not keep resetting.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Baxi E.04.13

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What E.04.13 means

E.04.13 is the fan lockout on Baxi's two-part and dotted displays: "fan rotor blocked" in the 200/400 Combi manual, "fan blade blocked" in the Combi 2 manual, and "fan impeller blocked or maximum rpm exceeded" on Baxi's professional page. The board asked the fan for a speed and did not get it — either the impeller is not turning, or it is turning far faster than commanded, which happens when the fan has nothing to push against because the tacho or the drive has failed. Either way the boiler cannot prove its combustion air is moving and will not open the gas valve.

Baxi's remedies are short. The 200/400 table: "fan seized, wiring to fan damaged — replace air/gas unit"; the Combi 2 table: "FAN/PCB PROBLEM — check the PCB-fan connection, replace the air-gas unit". The "air-gas unit" is Baxi's name on these ranges for the fan, venturi and gas valve as one assembly, and the point of the wording is that the fan is not a stand-alone part on the newer boilers.

The 200/400 manual has a second fan code, E01 11 "incorrect fan speed", with the cause "external draught over the boiler" and the check "adequate draw on the chimney connection" — a fan that is being spun by wind down the flue — and its user manual lists E01 11 and E04 13 together as "fan fault". This page is rated danger for the reason the boiler locks out: a burner running without proven air movement is a combustion risk, and an intermittent E.04.13 on a boiler that "usually works" is a fan on its way out. There is no householder step. The reset is the button, but a fan that would not turn a moment ago will not turn now, and Baxi's user manual sends a permanent fault that cannot be reset or that recurs to the installer or Baxi Customer Support.

What causes it

Causes of the Baxi E.04.13 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Fan seized or wornBaxi's "fan seized" and "fan blade blocked". Bearings that have worn over years, or debris drawn into the impeller. On these ranges the fan is replaced as part of the air-gas unit.Common
Wiring or the PCB-fan connectionThe Combi 2 table's first check. A plug that has worked loose or a lead damaged where it passes the fan housing; the fan is good and the board cannot see it.Common
Over speed from a lost load or draughtThe "maximum rpm exceeded" case on the professional page, and the 200/400's E01 11 "external draught over the boiler". Wind down a badly sited flue spins the fan, or a failed venturi lets it race.Occasional
Board fan driveThe PCB's fan supply or its speed control has failed. Reached after the connection and the fan have been checked.Rare
