This fault can involve incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide.

0800 111 999Vaillant F.25 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
On a current ecoTEC this is a flue gas temperature safety shutdown. The same number meant a cable break on the 2009 ecoTEC and a water switch fault on the ecoMAX.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Vaillant F.25
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.
What F.25 means
F.25 is the clearest case of a Vaillant code changing its meaning across generations, so start with which boiler you have. On the ecoTEC plus, pro and exclusive, the ecoFIT pure and sustain and the open-vent ecoTEC plus, and as F.025 on the 2022 CS/1-5, it is "safety switch-off: flue gas temperature too high"; the ecoTEC sustain table does not carry it.
The boilers can be fitted with an optional flue gas safety cut-out, and the ecoTEC plus check list runs through the plug and cable harness for it, the cable to the heating pump, the internal air vent, the flue route for blockage, adverse wind or an over-long flue, insufficient water in the heating circuit and the pump — so on those boilers F.25 is mostly a circulation code in disguise, because flue gas runs hot when the heat exchanger is not carrying heat away. The ecoFIT and exclusive tables add the electrical version: a break in the plug connection for the optional cut-out, or in its harness.
On the 2009 ecoTEC plus and pro the same number is "interruption in the compact thermal module cable harness", a wiring fault on the heat cell, and on the ecoMAX 600 and 800 series it is "water switch — plug disconnected, system pressure too low, water switch activated", a low-water protection. Three meanings, one code; the page below follows the current one.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Poor circulation letting flue gas run hot | Vaillant's check list names insufficient water, the pump and its cable and the internal air vent. Water not moving through the heat exchanger leaves the exhaust hotter than the cut-out allows. | Common |
| Flue route restricted or too long | Blockage, adverse wind conditions and flue pipework too long are all on the ecoTEC plus list. Restricted extraction raises the temperature at the cut-out. | Occasional |
| Break in the cut-out plug or harness | The ecoFIT and exclusive wording. An open circuit to the optional flue gas safety cut-out reads as a trip whether or not the flue is hot. | Occasional |
| Legacy meanings: cable harness or water switch | On a 2009 ecoTEC the code is a broken heat-cell harness; on an ecoMAX it is the water switch reporting low pressure or a disconnected plug. Neither involves flue temperature. | Occasional |

What it costs to fix
Typical repair cost
£90–£320
Time on site
1 hour
A harness or plug repair is a call-out of £90 to £150. A pump is £250 to £320 fitted; flue work depends entirely on what is found.

Common questions about Vaillant F.25
Should I check the pressure?
Yes, on any generation. Insufficient water is on the ecoTEC list and low pressure is the ecoMAX meaning outright. If the gauge is below 1 bar cold, top up as the F.22 page describes and note whether the code returns. If it does, the flue side needs an engineer.
Why the carbon monoxide flag on a temperature code?
Because two of Vaillant's stated causes are a blocked or restricted flue, and a flue problem is the one class of boiler fault that can put combustion products where they should not be. The boiler has stopped, which is the protection working; do not reset it repeatedly, and make sure a CO alarm is fitted and in date.
Which meaning applies to mine?
Look at the front of the boiler. A text display with a fault clearance key or a three-digit code is the flue temperature meaning. An "i" button beside a small display on an ecoTEC plus 612 to 837 is the 2009 harness meaning, and an ecoMAX badge is the water switch.
