Vaillant F.76 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
The overheating protection built into the primary heat exchanger has responded. A thermal fuse on the heat cell, or its wiring, has opened, and the boiler has stopped.
Take care
Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Vaillant F.76
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.
What F.76 means
Vaillant's condensing heat exchanger carries its own last line of defence, a safety fuse that opens if the metal itself gets too hot, independent of the flow and return sensors. F.76 is that fuse reporting. The 2009 servicing instructions print it as "overheating protection on primary heat exchanger triggered — cable or cable connection of fuse in the primary heat exchanger defective, or primary heat exchanger defective"; the open-vent ecoTEC plus repeats it almost word for word, and the 2022 CS/1-5 shows F.076 with the instruction to check the wiring harness and its plug on the PCB.
The ecoFIT pure and sustain word it differently — "the safety cut-out in the primary heat exchanger is defective; safety cut-out feedback does not match the gas valve assembly feedback" — which describes the same device from the board's side.
Two things follow. First, the fuse is a one-shot component: once it has opened it does not reset, so a genuine trip means a repair rather than a button press. Second, the fuse opens either because the heat exchanger really did overheat, which sends the engineer back to circulation and the causes behind F.20, or because its cable or connector has failed, which is far cheaper. Vaillant list both. The ecoTEC plus ..6/5-5, pro and exclusive tables do not carry F.76; their heat exchangers report through F.20.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Fuse cable or connector defective | Vaillant's first cause on the 2009 and open-vent tables. A broken lead or a corroded connector to the fuse reads as an open fuse without the heat exchanger ever having been hot. | Common |
| Heat exchanger genuinely overheated | Poor circulation from a failing pump, sludge or air let the metal reach the fuse temperature. The fuse then has to be replaced with the heat exchanger or, where Vaillant supply it separately, as a part. | Occasional |
| Feedback mismatch on the ecoFIT | On the ecoFIT pure and sustain the row is a disagreement between the cut-out's feedback and the gas valve's. It is an electrical diagnosis on the board rather than a thermal event. | Occasional |
| Primary heat exchanger defective | Vaillant's own final cause. A heat exchanger that has been run hot repeatedly, or is blocked internally, may need replacing rather than re-fused. | Rare |

What it costs to fix
Typical repair cost
£90–£1,200
Time on site

A fuse lead or connector repair is £90 to £160. If the heat exchanger has to be replaced, expect £700 to £1,200 fitted, and ask about the guarantee before agreeing to it.

Common questions about Vaillant F.76
Can I reset F.76?
You can press the reset once, and if the code is an intermittent connector it may clear. If the fuse has actually opened the code returns immediately, because the fuse does not restore itself. Repeated resets achieve nothing here.
Is a new heat exchanger inevitable?
No. Vaillant list the cable and connection first for good reason: an open circuit on the fuse lead is the common finding and is a wiring repair. A heat exchanger is the outcome only when the exchanger itself has failed or the fuse cannot be replaced separately.
Why does my ecoTEC plus manual not list F.76?
The ..6/5-5 plus, the pro and the exclusive tables do not carry the row; on those boilers heat exchanger overheating is caught by the sensors and reported as F.20. F.76 belongs to the 2005 to 2012 ecoTEC, the open-vent plus, the ecoFIT and the 2022 CS/1-5.
