On most Vitodens models this is low system pressure. Repressurise to 1.2 bar and it is usually the most homeowner-fixable Viessmann fault.

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the boiler.

What EA means

EA on a Vitodens is most commonly reported as low water pressure, and it is the Viessmann fault a householder is most likely to resolve without help. There is a genuine complication worth flagging: Viessmann use EA differently across ranges and controller types, and some documentation associates it with ignition failure or no flame detected rather than pressure. The Vitodens 200-W and 222-F, in particular, group EA with codes concerning flow rate during calibration. So the honest position is that EA usually means check your pressure first, and that if the pressure is demonstrably fine you should not keep assuming the code means what a general article says it means. Check the data plate, identify your exact model, and look it up against that. Where it is a pressure fault the fix is the standard one: find the filling loop, refill to 1.2 bar cold, and the appliance should resume.

What to try yourself

  1. Read the system pressure with everything cold. On the Vitodens it shows on the display or on a gauge below the appliance depending on model.

  2. If it is below 1 bar, find the filling loop and open it slowly, watching the pressure climb. Close it at 1.2 bar.

    Do not exceed 2.5 bar cold. Overfilling makes the safety valve discharge outside and puts you back where you started.
  3. Press the reset button, marked R on most Vitodens control panels, and call for heat.

  4. If the pressure was already normal, stop and check the data plate for your exact model before doing anything else. EA does not mean the same thing across the whole Vitodens range.

  5. With a normal gauge and a persistent EA, book an engineer and tell them the model and that pressure is correct. That combination changes what they check.
