Viessmann F.345 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Temperature limiter responded on a 2020-on Vitodens, but this row releases itself after cooling. Heat is not getting away from the boiler: check pressure and bleed radiators, and call an engineer if it keeps happening.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Viessmann properly.

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F.345 means

F.345 is the gentle relative of F.62. Its system characteristic is unusual enough to quote in full: "Burner locked out, automatic enabling after appliance cooldown. Independent restart — Temperature limiter has responded." So this is a lockout that Viessmann release themselves: the burner stops, the boiler cools, and it starts again without anyone pressing anything. It is the numeric table's version of what the older two-character units call a "blocked" burner, and it exists so that a brief overshoot — the diverter valve moving over as a tap is turned off, a thermostatic valve closing the last radiator — does not strand the household without heat.

The measures start with a line the F.62 row lacks: "Ensure adequate heat transfer." Then the familiar list — fill level, expansion vessel pre-charge, system pressure, pump flow rate, 3-way diverter valve, vent the system — and one more that is specific: "If the fault occurs during DHW heating: Check DHW cylinder or plate heat exchanger for contamination and scaling." A combi whose plate heat exchanger is scaled cannot dump the burner's output into the hot water fast enough, and the limiter catches it; a system boiler with a scaled cylinder coil does the same. Because the boiler recovers by itself, Viessmann treat F.345 as a message to act on rather than an emergency, and the operating instructions offer the householder two relevant steps: check the system pressure, and bleed radiators if there is air in the system. If the code appears often, or every time hot water runs, the cause is mechanical and the contractor should see it.

What causes it

Causes of the Viessmann F.345 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Heat has nowhere to goThermostatic valves all closed, a zone valve shut, or a diverter valve still moving as demand changes. A one-off F.345 that clears itself is usually this.Common
Plate heat exchanger or cylinder coil scaledViessmann's DHW-specific measure. Recurs during hot water draw-off; in hard-water areas the plate exchanger is the usual culprit on a combi.Common
Air or low pressure in the primary circuitAfter topping up or after work. Slows circulation through the heat exchanger and lets the limiter catch up with the burner.Occasional
Pump or diverter valve faultThe same mechanical causes as F.62, caught earlier. A boiler that gives F.345 for weeks tends to progress to F.62.Occasional

Can you fix it yourself?

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£300

Time on site

30 minutes

A self-clearing one-off costs nothing. A plate heat exchanger descale or replacement, or a pump, is the top of the range.

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
