Viessmann F.369 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Stop — call an engineerBoilerNumeric F-code display (2020 on): Vitodens 100-W B1HF/B1KF, B1HG/B1KG, B1GA; 111-W B1LF, B1LG; 050-W B0HA/B0KALast updated

The flame lit and was lost within the safety time on a 2020-on Vitodens; F.380 is the same row. Burner locked out. Gas supply, flue recirculation and the ionisation electrode need a Gas Safe engineer.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Viessmann F.369

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F.369 means

F.369 and F.380 share their cause word for word: "Flame is lost immediately after flame formation (during safety time)." Both are "Burner in a fault state". The safety time is the few seconds after ignition during which the control unit will tolerate an unstable flame before it must decide; a flame that appears and dies inside that window is a burner that lit on something — gas at the wrong pressure, air with flue gas in it, a mixture the electrode could barely see — and could not hold. The measures are the same for both numbers: "Check gas supply (gas pressure and gas flow switch). Check balanced flue system for flue gas recirculation. Check ionisation electrode: clearance to burner gauze assembly, contamination on electrode." F.369 ends "Reset the appliance"; the F.380 row does not print the line but the reset is the same.

The flue gas recirculation check is the one to take seriously. A balanced flue whose inner pipe leaks into the outer, or whose terminal is positioned so that exhaust is drawn back into the air intake, feeds the burner its own products; the flame lights and then starves. Viessmann put that check second, before the electrode, on every flame-loss row in the table. Gas flow pressure that collapses when the valve opens — a sticking regulator, an undersized or partly blocked supply — is the first. The electrode's gap to the burner gauze is a precise setting and the reason a cleaned-and-refitted electrode can still fail. The householder's part is a single reset and a call if it recurs; there is nothing to adjust from outside the case. F.381 (and F.378) is the same loss later, once the burner was established; F.64 is the version the boiler recovers from by itself.

What causes it

Causes of the Viessmann F.369 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Gas flow pressure collapsing on demandStatic pressure fine, working pressure not. A regulator, meter or supply-pipe problem; Viessmann's first measure names the gas pressure and the gas flow switch.Common
Flue gas recirculationExhaust drawn back into the combustion air through a leaking flue or a badly placed terminal. Second in the row; a flue inspection rather than a part.Common
Ionisation electrode gap or contaminationThe electrode too far from the gauze, or coated. Reads a weak signal and the unit drops the flame.Common
Gas solenoid valve sluggishA valve that opens late or unevenly gives a flame that flutters and fails inside the safety time. Confirmed by the contractor's pressure readings.Occasional

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£80–£300

Time on site

Electrode and visit at the low end; flue repair or gas train at the top. A supply-pressure problem may be the gas network's to fix.

What we check instead

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
