Viessmann F.370 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

The gas or modulation valve on a 2020-on Vitodens did not close when told to; burner locked out. F.365 to F.367 are the control side. Leave the boiler off; call a Gas Safe engineer.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Viessmann F.370

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What F.370 means

F.370 — "Burner in a fault state — Gas valve or modulation valve will not close." — is the numeric table's version of the two-character F8, and the same safety logic sits behind it: when the burner is commanded off, the control unit watches the flame signal disappear, and a flame that lingers past the permitted time can only mean gas still flowing through a valve that should be shut. Viessmann's measures are short: "Reset the appliance. If fault occurs repeatedly, replace fan unit." The fan unit is named because on these boilers the modulation valve that meters gas into the venturi is part of the gas/air unit rather than a separate gas train, so a sticking modulation valve is a fan unit replacement. F.365, "Feedback from gas valve relay contact implausible (relay contact is welded up)", and F.366/F.367, "Gas valve electricity supply does not turn off", are the same fault seen from the control side — the HBMU heat management unit's own relay has stuck or its drive will not release — and for those the only measure is to replace the heat management unit.

This is a row to take literally. A valve that may be passing gas is the reason Viessmann print their warning about resets beside every lockout, and a single reset — the arrow keys, after the burner has cooled — is the most the operating instructions permit before the contractor is called. If F.370 returns, or if there is any smell of gas, the boiler should be switched off at its ON/OFF switch and the gas shut-off valve closed, and the fault treated as urgent. There is no householder repair. The Vitotronic 200-W words the same event "Fuel valve or modulation valve will not close" under F8; the two-character 100-W rows say "Fuel valve closes too late".

What causes it

Causes of the Viessmann F.370 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Modulation valve stickingThe gas-metering valve in the fan unit not seating when de-energised. Viessmann's remedy for a repeat F.370 is the fan unit itself.Common
Heat management unit relay stuck (F.365 to F.367)A welded relay contact or a drive that will not switch off keeps the valve energised. The HBMU is replaced; there is no reset branch.Occasional
Flame signal persisting for another reasonAn ionisation signal that lingers after the valve has genuinely shut — a wet or earthed electrode — can mimic a valve fault. Checked before the fan unit is condemned.Occasional
Gas train faultWhere the boiler has a separate gas solenoid valve, a valve that closes slowly. Less common on these units than the modulation valve.Rare

No engineer has read this page. Severity follows what the manufacturer publishes, and we would rather tell you that than let a byline imply a sign-off.

What we check instead

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
