Worcester Bosch A8 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedBoilerGreenstar CDi Classic and the earlier CDi combi, system and regular boilers, where A8 is shown alone and means a break in communication to FX, Sense, TD200 or RT10 controls; Greenstar Highflow CDi, where it is an EMS communication error; Greenstar i and i System ErP, where A8 appears with 361 and means the heat control module does not match the board or display. Greenstar 8000 Life, 8000 Style, 8000+, 4000 and 2000 show the same loss of contact as 1010, no communication via EMS BUS, an operating message whose checks are the HMI plug and the Key's four wires on the board; the 2000 also uses 323, BUS signal cannot be processed. The 2004 to 2007 Greenstar HE range — R 25 and R 30 HE combi, R 28 HE system, R 30, 35 and 40 HE Plus — has a two-character display that shows A8 alone for a break in communication with the programmer, and a neighbour, AC, module not detected, whose check is the lead between the TA211E or TR212E control and the Heatronic.Last updated

The boiler has lost communication with a Worcester control on the two-wire bus — a Sense, FX or FW controller, or a Wave thermostat. Heating usually carries on at the boiler's own settings.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Worcester Bosch properly.

What A8 means

A8 is the communication fault across every Worcester generation, and only the wording changes. The Greenstar CDi Classic table gives it as "break in communication to FX/Sense controls — check electrical connections"; the earlier CDi combi and system manuals say the same about the TD200 and RT10 controls of their day; the Highflow manual calls it "EMS communication error".

On the Greenstar i ErP the letters gain a cause code and a narrower meaning — A8 361, "HCM invalid: the inserted HCM does not correspond with the control box or HMI type", which is an internal mismatch rather than a wiring one. What all the bus versions share is the two-terminal EMS connection, marked B B on the boiler and on the control, over which a Worcester programmer or thermostat talks to the board. Break that pair, wire it to the wrong terminals, or fit a control the board does not recognise, and A8 appears.

Worcester's service booklet for the CDi Classic walks the engineer through it in order: continuity of the B wires between controller and boiler, then any branch box and bus module in between, then the programmer, then the bus module, and only then the control board. The boiler itself is usually not the problem. It keeps making heat, because the fault is in the instruction path rather than the burner, and the practical effect is that the room control has stopped talking to it.

What causes it

Causes of the Worcester Bosch A8 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Loose or broken bus wiringThe two B wires run from the boiler terminal strip to the controller's wall plate. A backing plate pulled off the wall or a screw terminal worked loose is the usual break.Common
Control wired to the wrong terminalsWorcester's booklet is specific that the B terminals must be used and the centre terminal must not carry a bus connection. A control fitted onto switched-live terminals cannot communicate.Common
Controller or bus module failureA programmer with a dead display, or a plug-in bus module that has failed, breaks the conversation at one end. Worcester have these replaced before the boiler's own board.Occasional
Wrong heat control module on a Greenstar iA8 361 on the i-series is a module that does not match the board or display it is plugged into, typically after a part has been swapped for the wrong variant.Rare

What to try yourself

  1. Check the room controller. If its display is blank or it shows its own communication warning, the break is at that end — a wall plate that has come loose is worth pressing home.

  2. Reset the boiler using the procedure for your range: three seconds on the reset button for a CDi Classic, a brief single press on a Greenstar i or Compact.

  3. If the code clears and returns, leave the controller alone and book an engineer. Bus wiring runs at low voltage but it terminates inside the boiler casing, which is not for you to open.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Worcester Bosch A8

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

Common questions about Worcester Bosch A8

Will I lose heating while A8 is showing?

Usually not. The boiler falls back to running on its own dials, so you may have heat you cannot time or set from the room. Hot water on a combi is unaffected.

I have just fitted a smart thermostat and now it shows A8.

If the old Worcester controller was on the bus and the new one is a switched-live thermostat, the boiler may still be configured for bus control. An engineer can either remove the bus expectation or fit the new stat correctly; either way it is a settings and wiring visit, not a boiler repair.

My display says A8 with 361 under it.

That is the Greenstar i's internal version: the heat control module does not match the control box or display. It follows a part change rather than a wiring fault, and the fix is the correct module. Quote both halves when you call.
