LG Lo status codewhat it means
Not a fault. LG classify this as a warning that the room is below minus ten degrees, which is why garage fridges misbehave in winter.
Before you start
What Lo means
LG split their published code list into codes that indicate a malfunction and codes that may appear on the display but do not indicate a refrigerator fault, and Lo is in the second group. Their wording is that it is a warning that the ambient temperature has dropped below minus ten degrees Celsius, and that the product will not function optimally in an environment with such low temperatures. HI is the same idea at the other end, warning that the ambient temperature has risen above plus fifty. Neither has a remedy in LG's list, because there is nothing to repair. This is the code behind one of the most confusing complaints in the category: a freezer in an unheated garage that thaws in the middle of winter. It sounds like nonsense until you understand that a fridge does not make cold, it moves heat out of the cabinet, and it decides when to do that by reading a thermostat.
Whirlpool put it plainly in their own garage FAQ: if the room is too cold, your thermostat may not allow the appliance to turn on. Beko draw the line that follows from it: their static fridge freezers and larder fridges need a room of ten degrees and above, while their freezers and most frost-free fridge freezers can run down to minus fifteen. The reason, and this is this page’s explanation rather than either manufacturer’s, is that a static fridge freezer has one compressor and a thermostat reading the fridge compartment; when the room is already colder than the fridge wants to be, the thermostat never calls for the compressor, and the freezer, which depends on the same compressor, warms. The appliance is doing exactly what it was designed to do in conditions it was not designed for.
Every appliance carries a climate class on the rating plate stating the ambient range it was built for — Beko publish the three common ones as SN, plus ten to plus thirty-two; N, plus sixteen to plus thirty-two; and ST, plus eighteen to plus thirty-eight — and LG’s own installation guidance asks for a room between five and forty-three degrees. None of those covers a British garage in January. Garage-rated models exist precisely for this and are the reliable answer if the appliance has to live in an unheated space. The high end matters too, though it is less common: a fridge in a conservatory in August, or crammed into a cupboard with no clearance and a dusty condenser at the back, cannot shed the heat it removes and will run continuously without ever getting properly cold.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| The room is colder than the appliance is rated for | LG publish minus ten degrees as the warning threshold. An unheated garage, outhouse or porch in a British winter reaches that comfortably. | Common |
| A standard appliance in an unheated space | Not a fault so much as a mismatch. Kitchen-rated appliances are built for a narrower ambient range than a garage provides. | Common |
| The ambient sensor reading wrongly | The one fault reading. If the warning shows in a normally heated room, the sensor is telling the appliance something untrue and that is worth a service call. | Rare |
What to try yourself
Check where the appliance is and what the temperature there actually is. LG’s threshold is minus ten degrees ambient, which an unheated outbuilding reaches in a cold snap.
Find the climate class on the rating plate inside the appliance. It gives the ambient range the appliance was designed for, and it is the fact that settles this.
See whether the problem tracks the weather. Trouble in cold snaps and none in summer is the room rather than the appliance.
Move the appliance somewhere heated if you can. There is no repair for an appliance being in the wrong environment.
If it has to stay in a garage, replace it with a garage-rated model when the time comes. They are built for a wider ambient range and it is the only reliable fix.
If the warning appears in a normally heated room, that is different — book an engineer, because the ambient sensor is reporting something untrue.
Get a qualified refrigeration engineer to look at your LG Lo
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified refrigeration engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Common questions about LG Lo
Is Lo a fault?
No, and LG classify it that way themselves. Their list separates codes that indicate a malfunction from codes that may appear on the display but do not indicate a refrigerator fault, and Lo sits in the second group alongside HI and shop mode.
Why does a cold garage stop the freezer working?
Whirlpool’s wording: if the room is too cold, the thermostat may not allow the appliance to turn on. On a static fridge freezer with one compressor and a thermostat in the fridge compartment, that means the freezer stops getting cold too, and the contents thaw in a room that is nearly freezing. Beko say their static fridge freezers need ten degrees and above while their freezers and most frost-free fridge freezers can run down to minus fifteen, which is the same point from the other side.
What does HI mean?
The same idea in the other direction. LG publish it as a warning that the ambient temperature has risen above plus fifty degrees Celsius, with the same statement that the product will not function optimally in such an environment. In practice, performance falls off well before fifty in an unventilated space.
