Daikin H4 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedHeat pumpDaikin Altherma heat pumps whose tables carry it: the Altherma 3 H F and the Altherma 3 H HT (European and North American service manuals). Shown as H4-00 on those controllers. It is not in the Altherma 3 M table, and not in the 2018 Altherma LT split table either, so on a monobloc or an LT split a display reading H4 deserves a second look at the code.Last updated

Malfunction of the low pressure switch, a protection device on the refrigerant side of the outdoor unit. Daikin publish the name and nothing an owner can act on; it is certified work.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get an F-Gas certified heat pump engineer to look at the Daikin properly.

Get an F-Gas certified heat pump engineer to look at your Daikin H4

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book an F-Gas certified heat pump engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What H4 means

H4 appears in Daikin’s Altherma error table as "Malfunction of low pressure switch", and that is the whole of what Daikin publish for owners. The low pressure switch is a safety device in the refrigerant circuit that opens if the suction pressure falls below a set point, and its purpose is to stop the compressor before it damages itself running on too little refrigerant. So H4 sits next to U0 in practice: one says the charge is short, the other says the device that guards against a short charge has either tripped or failed.

Daikin’s service documentation for the larger Altherma 3 H HT range gives H4-00 a troubleshooting page of its own and lists the low pressure switch among the outdoor unit’s repairable components, which tells you two things — that the switch itself is a replaceable part, and that the diagnosis is a job for whoever can open the outdoor unit. Nobody without F-Gas certification may do that on an R32 or R410A system. It is worth being honest about the limits here. Daikin’s owner-facing table gives a name, not a cause, and we have not read the detailed H4 procedure, so this page will not tell you whether your switch has tripped on genuinely low pressure, failed electrically or lost its connector.

An engineer with gauges will, in about ten minutes. What you can usefully establish is whether the unit still runs at all, whether the code appeared in very cold weather — the extreme of the operating envelope, where suction pressure is at its lowest — and whether anything else showed alongside it, particularly U0. Those three observations shorten the visit.

What causes it

Causes of the Daikin H4 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Refrigerant pressure genuinely lowThe switch doing its job: a leak or a short charge has dropped suction pressure below the set point. If U0 has also appeared, this is the likely reading.Common
The switch or its wiring faultyDaikin’s wording is malfunction of the switch, and their service literature lists it as a replaceable component in the outdoor unit. A failed switch or loose connector reports a problem that is not there.Common
Operating at the cold edge of the envelopeSuction pressure is lowest in the coldest weather. A marginal charge or a restricted circuit that is fine in October can trip the switch in a January cold snap.Occasional

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£120–£900

Time on site

10 minutes

A diagnostic visit from an F-Gas certified engineer is typically £120 to £250. A replacement low pressure switch is a modest part on top; a leak repair and recharge is where the range widens.

Common questions about Daikin H4

What does a low pressure switch actually do?

It is a safety device that opens when the pressure on the suction side of the compressor falls below a set point, stopping the compressor before it runs dry. Daikin name it as a component in their Altherma outdoor units; its purpose is protection, so a trip is the machine looking after itself.

Why will you not tell me the cause?

Because Daikin publish a name for H4, not a cause, and we do not fill that gap from trade lists. The two realistic possibilities — pressure genuinely low, or the switch itself faulty — are stated above with the reasoning behind them, and an engineer with gauges settles it quickly.

Is this an expensive fault?

It depends entirely on which of the two it is. A failed switch is a modest part and a short visit. Genuinely low pressure means a leak to find and repair, which is the more expensive outcome and the reason not to keep resetting the unit in the meantime.
