Vaillant E5 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Usually simple to fixHeat pumpAll Vaillant aroTHERM, aroTHERM plus, uniTOWER and sensoCOMFORT documentation checked. None uses an E5 code.Last updated

E5 is not a Vaillant heat pump code. Vaillant’s aroTHERM, uniTOWER and sensoCOMFORT fault tables run F.5xx to F.9998, so an E5 on your display belongs to something else in the system.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the heat pump.

What E5 means

We went looking for E5 in Vaillant’s own documentation for the aroTHERM plus outdoor unit, the uniTOWER plus indoor unit and the sensoCOMFORT system control, and on Vaillant UK’s owner-facing list of heat pump fault codes. It is in none of them, and this page exists to say so rather than to invent a meaning. Vaillant’s heat pump vocabulary is consistent: faults are F followed by a dot and three or four digits, such as F.514, F.820 or F.1120; running states are S codes; maintenance messages are M codes; and the controller adds plain-text messages such as Radio communication interrupted.

There is no E family. So if a screen in your house is showing E5, the useful question is which screen. A Vaillant heat pump system usually has several — the indoor unit display, the sensoCOMFORT controller, the myVAILLANT app, and often a third-party room thermostat, smart hub, immersion timer or hot water controller that was fitted alongside. E-format codes are common on other manufacturers’ controls, and on a hybrid system the boiler has a display of its own.

A second possibility is a misreading. F.5xx codes on a small display, read at an angle, get reported as E5 more often than you would think, and the dot after the F is the giveaway. What we will not do is tell you what E5 means, because any meaning we gave would be borrowed from another manufacturer’s appliance and presented as Vaillant’s. If the heat pump has actually stopped, its own display will be showing an F code, and that is the page to read.

What to try yourself

  1. Look again at the code. Vaillant heat pump faults read F followed by a dot and three or four digits. If yours has a dot and more digits, it is an F code and this site has a page for it.

  2. Identify which screen is showing E5 — the indoor unit, the sensoCOMFORT controller, the app, or a separate thermostat or timer. Anything not made by Vaillant has its own manual, and that manual is the source.

  3. Check whether the heat pump itself has stopped. If it has, its own display will carry a Vaillant F code, and that is the fault to act on.

  4. If you cannot trace the device, photograph the screen and send it to your installer. They fitted whatever it is and will recognise it.

Get an F-Gas certified heat pump engineer to look at your Vaillant E5

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book an F-Gas certified heat pump engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

No cost attaches to a code that is not the heat pump’s. If the system has actually stopped, the F code on the Vaillant display is the one to price.

Common questions about Vaillant E5

Why is there a page for a code that does not exist?

Because people search for it and land somewhere that does not answer them. Saying plainly that Vaillant publish no E5 for their heat pumps, and explaining where such a code is likely to be coming from, is more use than either silence or a borrowed meaning.

Could E5 be from my Vaillant boiler in a hybrid system?

Unlikely, because Vaillant boilers also use F codes — F.22, F.28, F.75 and so on. An E5 on a hybrid system is more likely from a non-Vaillant boiler or a third-party controller. Check the badge on whatever is displaying it.

Other websites say E5 means overheating. Is that wrong?

It is not Vaillant’s. Those lists are describing other manufacturers’ appliances, and we do not present a trade list’s meaning as if it came from the manufacturer. If your Vaillant heat pump has overheated it will say so with an F code — F.732, F.737 or F.1100 depending on where.

What we check instead

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation
  • Manufacturer support portal
  • Manufacturer documentation checked — this code is not published in it, and we say so on the page

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
