Beko E17 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Too much foam. Beko give a five-part remedy that is entirely about how you dose detergent, and none of it involves a repair.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the washing machine.

What E17 means

E17 is recorded when there is excess foam in the machine after a completed cycle, and it is a housekeeping code rather than a fault. Foam is a genuine problem for a washing machine rather than a cosmetic one: a drum full of suds cushions the load so the machine cannot read the weight properly, it makes the level sensor unreliable, and it can push water past seals that would otherwise hold. That is why Beko record it.

The remedy they publish is unusually detailed for them and it is all dosing: store detergent somewhere dry and closed so it does not clump, use less for porous loads like net curtains and tulle which hold far more water than their weight suggests, dose to the size of the load and how dirty it actually is rather than to the cap, and use the correct compartment.

They then tell you to run the Drum Cleaning programme empty, or a 90 degree cotton wash if your model has no Drum Cleaning, followed by a short programme with no detergent at all to rinse the residue through. The commonest single cause in British homes is a soft water area combined with a full cap of detergent, because dose instructions on the bottle assume hard water.

What causes it

Causes of the Beko E17 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Too much detergent for the water hardnessBottle doses assume hard water. In a soft water area the same cap produces far more foam than intended.Common
Porous or lightweight loadsBeko name tulle specifically. Net curtains, voile and similar hold much more water than their weight suggests and foam heavily.Common
Detergent that has absorbed dampBeko say to store it dry and closed. Clumped powder doses unevenly and overshoots.Occasional
Wrong compartment usedDetergent in the prewash drawer when no prewash is selected ends up added at the wrong point in the cycle.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Cut the detergent dose. Start at about two thirds of what you have been using and reduce again if the glass still shows a head of foam.

  2. Run the Drum Cleaning programme with the drum empty, or a 90 degree cotton wash if your model has no Drum Cleaning programme.

  3. Follow that with a short programme, empty, with no detergent at all, to flush the residue out of the system.

  4. Check which compartment you are using, and move detergent out of the prewash section unless you are actually selecting a prewash.

  5. Store the detergent somewhere dry with the lid closed. Beko list damp detergent as a cause in its own right.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Beko E17

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.
