Beko Padlock symbolwhat it means

Usually simple to fixWashing machineLast updated

A padlock on the display is the child lock, not a fault. Beko unlock it by holding the second and fourth auxiliary buttons together for three seconds.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the washing machine.

What this means

This is the single most searched Beko display that is not a fault, and Beko answer it directly in their own UK support pages: the padlock sign means the child lock is on. To turn it off, press the second and fourth auxiliary buttons from left to right at the same time and hold them for three seconds. Beko add an important caveat of their own, which most guides drop — they say plainly that these buttons can change from model to model. So if the second and fourth do nothing on yours, that is expected rather than a fault, and the button combination for your specific machine will be in its manual.

Two of their manuals show how far it varies: the BM3WT3741 uses a single button, auxiliary function button 3, held for three seconds through a 3-2-1 countdown until the child lock symbol goes; the BMM5DFO5741W washer-dryer uses the SPIN key held for three seconds. While you hold the right buttons on the FAQ’s machines, the display shows a line linking the two and a padlock sign, which is how you know you have found them.

What the child lock does is disable the control panel so that a programme cannot be changed or cancelled once it is running. On most Beko machines it does not lock the door — the door is held by the separate interlock — but the washer-dryer manual is explicit that on that platform the door cannot be opened while the child lock is set. A machine with the child lock on will complete its cycle normally; you simply cannot alter anything while it does.

What to try yourself

  1. Press the second and fourth auxiliary buttons, counting from the left, at the same time and hold for three seconds.

  2. Watch the display while you hold them. A line linking the two buttons and a padlock sign confirms you have the right pair.

  3. If nothing happens, check your model’s manual. Beko state explicitly that the button combination changes between models: on the BM3WT3741 it is auxiliary function button 3 alone, held for three seconds through a 3-2-1 countdown; on the BMM5DFO5741W washer-dryer it is the SPIN key held for three seconds.

  4. If you cannot find the combination, check what your manual says about switching off. Beko’s washer-dryer manual says turning the machine off at the selector cancels the child lock; their BM3WT3741 manual says only that On/Off still works with the lock active and the programme resumes when you switch back on, so on that machine expect the lock to be waiting for you.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Beko washing machine

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What we check instead

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer support portal
  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
