Beko U4 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
The door lock has not confirmed. Beko publish a specific unsticking sequence, and a clear line for when it means the lock has actually failed.

What U4 means
U4 is the door lock code on Beko’s washer-dryer platform, and it is the only door code Beko publish across either family — the diagnostic-readout machines have nothing equivalent. Beko give the fault type as "Door lock malfunction" and then split it into two situations, which is more helpful than most manufacturers manage.
The first is simply that the door is not closed in place, and their remedy is a sequence rather than just "shut it properly": close the door again, turn the selector knob to OFF, then select any programme and press start to restart. That order matters, because turning to OFF is what clears the latched fault; closing the door on its own leaves the code showing. The second situation is the real one — if the code shows and the door will not open, Beko say the door lock may be faulty and to contact service.
A washing machine door interlock is not a simple catch. It is a thermal or solenoid device that has to positively confirm the door is shut before the drum will turn, and it is designed to fail locked rather than unlocked, because a door that could open mid-spin would be far worse. That is why a failed lock leaves your washing sealed in.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Door not fully latched | Beko’s first case. Something caught in the seal, or the door pushed rather than closed firmly. | Common |
| Washing trapped in the door seal | A sleeve or a corner of a duvet cover across the latch face stops it engaging. Very common with overfilled drums. | Common |
| Interlock failed | Beko’s second case: the code shows and the door will not open. Designed to fail locked, so your washing is sealed in. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Open the door if you can and run a hand right round the seal, checking nothing is caught across the latch.
Close the door firmly until you hear it latch, rather than pushing it to.
Turn the selector knob to OFF. This is the step people miss and it is what clears the latched code.
Select any programme and press start. Beko’s own restart sequence.
If the code stays and the door will not open, stop. Beko say the lock may be faulty and to contact service. Do not force it.
Do not force the door. Beko print "Do not force open the locked loading door" as a safety instruction in their current manuals, and the emergency release is designed to be used only after the drum has been drained.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Beko U4
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.
