Miele 888 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
Demo mode. The machine will not start because it is set up for a shop floor, and Miele publish the exit sequence.
Before you start
What 888 means
A Miele showing 888 that refuses to start is not broken — it is in demonstration mode, the setting shops use so a machine on display lights up and responds without ever running water. Miele publish this directly: 888 is shown on the display, the programme does not start, demo mode is activated.
The exit sequence on machines with an on-off button is specific and worth following exactly: switch the machine off, close the door, touch and hold the start-stop sensor control, and switch the machine on while keeping start-stop pressed, until start-stop flashes. The order matters, because you are holding a control through the power-on rather than pressing it afterwards. This is a genuinely valuable page because of who encounters it. It is almost always somebody who has bought an ex-display machine, or taken delivery of one that came from a showroom floor, and they have a brand new appliance that appears to be dead on arrival.
The instinct is to ring the retailer and arrange a return. The actual answer takes about fifteen seconds once you know the sequence, and Miele are the only one of the major brands to publish a demo mode exit for washing machines at all.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Machine came from a showroom floor | The usual route. Ex-display and returned stock frequently arrive with demo mode still set. | Common |
| Demo mode enabled accidentally | The same button combination that exits it can enable it, so an unlucky press during cleaning will do it. | Occasional |
What to try yourself
Switch the machine off.
Close the door. Miele include this in the sequence and it matters.
Touch and hold the start-stop sensor control, and keep holding it.
While still holding start-stop, switch the machine on. Keep holding until start-stop flashes.
Release, then select a programme normally. The 888 should be gone and the machine should run.
Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele 888
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

No engineer has read this page. Severity follows what the manufacturer publishes, and we would rather tell you that than let a byline imply a sign-off.
