Miele F41 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

An electronic module fault — but the only one of them where Miele publish an owner step. Switch off, wait about ten seconds, switch back on.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Miele properly.

What F41 means

Miele publish seven or eight codes that all describe an electronic module fault, and F41 is the only one where they give you something to try. Their instruction is precise: switch the washing machine off and then back on again after approximately ten seconds, and contact Service only if it persists.

Every other electronic module code — F39, F43, F44, F45, F47, F49 and F130 among them — carries their standard sentence instead, that this is a technical fault you cannot remedy yourself and you should book a repair. That distinction is deliberate rather than an oversight, and it is the useful content on this page: Miele are telling you that F41 is the one that can be a transient state rather than a failed component. The ten seconds matters more than it looks.

Control boards hold a charge in their capacitors for a few seconds after the power goes, and a module that is stuck will still be stuck if you flick the switch off and straight back on, because it never actually lost power. Counting to ten is what makes it a real power cycle. If it comes back after that, it has stopped being a glitch and become a fault, and Miele’s advice is then the same as for all the others.

What causes it

Causes of the Miele F41 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Transient module stateThe reason Miele publish a power cycle for this code and not the others. A momentary condition rather than a failure.Common
Mains disturbance or brief supply interruptionA brownout or a spike can leave a control board in a state it cannot exit on its own.Occasional
Electronic module genuinely failedWhat it means if it returns after a proper power cycle. At that point Miele’s advice matches their other module codes.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Switch the machine off. At the machine, and ideally at the socket as well.

  2. Wait about ten seconds. Miele specify the delay and it matters — the board holds a charge for a few seconds, so a quick off-and-on is not a power cycle at all.

  3. Switch it back on and select a programme.

  4. If the code has gone, use the machine normally. A single transient is not a reason to book anything.

  5. If it comes back, stop and book a Miele engineer. Repeating the cycle indefinitely will not fix a failed module.

Do not keep power cycling a machine that keeps returning the same fault. Miele offer this step once, not as a routine.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Miele F41

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Typical repair cost

£0–£350

Nothing if the power cycle clears it. A replacement electronic module fitted by Miele is typically £220 to £350, at which point the age of the machine matters.

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.
