Baxi E.04.10 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedBoilerTwo alternating pairs, E04 then 10, on the Baxi 200 and 400 Combi of 2016–2023 (RESET at least three seconds). Dotted E.04.10 on the 200, 400, 600 and 800 Combi 2, 600 and 800 System 2 and Assure 500 from 2023 (RESET one second). Three-digit Baxis show E133 for the same lockout.Last updated

Ignition failure on the Baxi 200/400 Combi and every Combi 2: the burner would not light after its allowed attempts. Baxi's own quick guide names it the frozen-condensate code you can fix yourself.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Baxi properly.

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What E.04.10 means

E.04.10 is the ignition lockout on the two newest Baxi display systems, and the two manuals define it slightly differently. The 2016 Baxi 200 and 400 Combi manual, where it is shown as E04 alternating with 10, calls it "5 burner start-up failures"; the 600 Combi 2 manual of 2023, where it is printed with dots, says "Burner failed to ignite after 4 attempts", and Baxi's professional page uses the Combi 2 wording. Either way the board has sparked, seen no flame, and stopped with a permanent fault — the letter E — that "prevents the boiler operating and will not automatically reset".

The reset differs by generation and both are quoted here because the hold times are not the same: on the 200 and 400 Combi "the RESET button must be pressed for at least 3 seconds to restart the boiler", and the same manual warns that "pressing the RESET button for 5 seconds will start the de-aeration process", a five-minute purge you did not ask for; on the Combi 2 "press the RESET button for one second".

Baxi's quick-start guide for the Combi 2 puts E.04.10 in a box headed "Error codes that you can put right yourself" with the explanation "Frozen condensate pipe — sometimes when it's very cold, the white plastic condensate pipe outside freezes, and your boiler will shut down to protect itself", and points to their thawing video. That is the householder's share of this code. The installer's share, from the Combi 2 table, is longer: gas supply pressure, gas valve connection and calibration, electrode connections and condition, fan operation and "the condition of the flue gas exhaust (blockages)"; the 200/400 table adds "check the earthing" and, for a spark with no flame, "purge the gas supply to remove air". A related code, H.03.02 "temporary flame loss", is the same boiler losing a flame it had lit and trying again on its own, and E.01.04 is that happening five times in a day.

What causes it

Causes of the Baxi E.04.10 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Frozen condensate pipeThe cause Baxi name for the householder. Ice in the outside run of the white plastic pipe blocks the drain, condensate backs up, and the burner cannot light. Thaw it and reset.Common
Gas supplyThe first item in both engineer tables: "check the gas supply pressure", "check that the gas valve is fully opened", and after a meter change or long shutdown "purge the gas supply to remove air". A prepayment meter with no credit produces the same code.Common
Ignition electrode or its wiringBoth manuals: check the electrode connections and condition, and on the 200/400 "replace the ionization/ignition electrode" and "check the earthing". A cracked or eroded electrode sparks weakly or senses no flame.Common
Gas valve or its calibrationThe Combi 2 table: "check the gas valve electrical connection, check the gas valve calibration, check the operation of the gas valve". Set with an analyser; an engineer-only adjustment on a sealed component.Occasional
Fan or flueLast in the Combi 2 list: "check the operation of the fan" and "the condition of the flue gas exhaust (blockages)". The 200/400 adds "check that there is no recirculation of flue gases". A boiler that cannot move its combustion air will not light.Occasional

Common questions about Baxi E.04.10

Why does the manual say four attempts and the older one five?

Because the two ranges count differently. The 2016 Baxi 200/400 Combi manual defines E04 10 as "5 burner start-up failures"; the 2023 Combi 2 manual defines E.04.10 as "burner failed to ignite after 4 attempts". Same lockout, different threshold.

Is E04 10 the same as E.04.10?

Yes. The 200 and 400 Combi show the code as two alternating pairs, E04 then 10; the Combi 2 prints it with dots on a larger display. Baxi describe both as a permanent fault that needs the RESET button.

What is the difference between E.04.10 and H.03.02?

H.03.02 is "temporary flame loss": the burner lit, lost its flame, and the boiler will retry on its own. E.04.10 is the boiler giving up after its allowed ignition attempts and waiting for a reset.
