Baxi E09 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Gas valve connection cable fault on the 600, 800, Compact and Duo-tec 2. The board cannot talk to the valve. Baxi allow one reset; a repeat means the wiring or the PCB.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Baxi properly.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Baxi E09

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What E09 means

E09 opens every Baxi digital-display table: "Gas valve connection cable". It is shown with a leading zero on the display and Baxi's professional page calls it "Gas valve connection fault". The 600 and 800 manuals put it in the group where "09 followed by 15 or 384 indicates possible faulty components", list it among the codes that can be relit by "pressing the Reset button for 1 to 3 seconds", and in the fault-finding flow give the same instruction as for E15: "If 09, 15, 110 or 384 is flashing or re-occurs regularly, check all PCB connections. If this has no effect replace the PCB."

The code is about the wiring between the control board and the gas valve, not about gas. On these boilers the valve is driven and monitored through a plug-and-cable set, and the board checks that circuit before it will attempt ignition; an open circuit, a connector that has worked loose, or a damaged cable produces E09 before any spark is made. That makes it a relatively cheap fault when the cable really is the cause and a more expensive one when the valve coil or the board has failed.

There is nothing for a householder to do beyond a single reset, since the components are inside the sealed case. Baxi do not print E09 on the selector-switch Duo-tec HE or Platinum, which report gas valve problems through E133.

What causes it

Causes of the Baxi E09 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Gas valve connector loose or damagedThe plug on the valve or at the PCB has vibrated loose or a pin has corroded. Baxi's first instruction is to check all PCB connections, and this is the connection they mean.Common
Gas valve coil open circuitThe board sees the valve circuit as broken because the coil inside the valve has failed. The 600 and 800 gas valve is Baxi part 7683968 and is replaced as a unit.Occasional
PCB gas valve drive faultWhen the cable and the valve test good, Baxi's flow ends at "replace the PCB". The drive circuit is on the board.Occasional

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.
