Baxi E134 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedBoilerDigital display with an R symbol: Baxi 600 and 800 Combi and System, Duo-tec 2 Combi GA, Duo-tec, Platinum and Megaflo Compact, Megaflo System, Assure. Selector-switch Baxis do not print E134.Last updated

Baxi's "elapsed time — gas valve open without gas": the valve opened, nothing arrived. Check the meter and credit before anything else; it resets from the panel.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Baxi properly.

Do other gas appliances work?

The right answer depends on what you can see. Pick the one that matches.

Choose the option on the left that matches what your appliance is doing, and the answer for that case appears here.

No — the hob will not light

Supply problem. The boiler is right.

Meter credit, emergency control valve, or your gas supplier.

Yes, the hob is fine

Gas is reaching the house but not the burner: boiler gas cock, gas valve, or the boiler cannot see its own flame.

Check the cock under the boiler, reset once, then an engineer.

What E134 means

E134 is the most literal code in the Baxi table. The Duo-tec 2 Combi GA user guide prints it as "Elapsed Time — Gas Valve Open Without Gas", and Baxi's professional page expands it to "elapsed time gas valve open without gas (short request in a short period)". The 600 and 800 manuals group it with its neighbours — "133, 134 and 135 indicates that the gas supply has been interrupted, ignition has failed or the flame has not been detected" — and list it among the codes that can be relit by "pressing the Reset button for 1 to 3 seconds".

Where E133 is a general ignition lockout, E134 is the board saying that it has had the valve open for its full allowance of time and detected no gas at the burner, which is a statement about supply first and the valve second. In practice that means the meter (prepayment credit, an emergency control valve knocked shut, a supply interruption in the street), a gas cock on the boiler pipework closed after other work, or air in a supply that has just been reinstated.

If gas is demonstrably arriving at the boiler — the hob lights, an engineer measures working pressure at the test point — the fault moves inside: a gas valve that is not opening despite being told to, or a sensing electrode that cannot see a flame that is actually there. Baxi print E134 only on the digital-display boilers; a selector-switch Duo-tec HE or Platinum reports the same situation as E133.

What causes it

Causes of the Baxi E134 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
No gas at the meterPrepayment meter out of credit, or the emergency control valve at the meter turned off. Baxi's user guides tell you to check the gas isolation cock is open and that a prepayment meter has sufficient credit.Common
Boiler gas cock closedThe isolation valve on the gas pipe under the boiler is easy to knock or to leave closed after work on the kitchen. It should be in line with the pipe, not across it.Common
Air in a newly reinstated supplyAfter a meter change or a supply interruption the pipework is full of air, and the first attempts to light purge it rather than burn. One or two resets are expected in that case.Occasional
Gas valve not openingThe board energises the valve and nothing happens. Baxi's fault-finding treats a burner that never lights with gas present as an electrode, gas valve or PCB problem; the 600 and 800 valve is part 7683968.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Try another gas appliance. If the hob will not light either, the problem is the supply or the meter, not the boiler.

  2. Check the gas isolation cock under the boiler is open — the slot or handle in line with the pipe — and, on a prepayment meter, that there is credit and the meter is not showing an off message.

  3. Press the Reset button for one to three seconds. Baxi list E134 among the codes this relights. If it comes straight back with gas confirmed at the hob, stop and call an engineer.

Do not reset repeatedly. Each attempt opens the gas valve again.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Baxi E134

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.
