Viessmann b0 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Flue gas temperature sensor fault — b0 short circuit, b8 lead break. The burner is blocked until the sensor reads plausibly, because it is part of the flue overheat protection. Engineer job.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Viessmann properly.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Viessmann b0

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What b0 means

The flue gas temperature sensor sits in the flue outlet of the heat exchanger and gives the control unit the reading behind F1 (maximum flue gas temperature exceeded). b0 is "Burner blocked — Short circuit, flue gas temperature sensor" and b8 is "Burner blocked — Lead break, flue gas temperature sensor", measure "Check the sensor", on the WB1B, WB1C, B1HA/B1KA and B1HC/B1KC, the 111-W B1LA to B1LD, the 050-W BPJD and the Vitotronic 200-W B2HA, 222-F and 242-F. The 2019 B2HB edition promotes both to "Burner in a fault state", which means a lockout needing the R key rather than an automatic restart; every other edition blocks the burner and releases it when the sensor returns. A boiler that cannot see its flue gas temperature cannot protect its plastic flue, so it does not run.

The WB1A table has no flue gas sensor rows at all. Because the sensor is in the flue gas path, Viessmann's repair chapter for the B1HC also gives a positioning check — code A3 is the sensor fitted in the wrong position — and a sensor that has been disturbed during a service can produce b8 before it produces A3. There is no householder step and no reset on the two-character units; on a Vitotronic B2HB the one permitted press of R applies. On the 2020-on numeric-table units the pair is F.49 (lead break) and F.50 (short circuit), both "Burner in a fault state", and F.393/F.394 report a second flue gas sensor where one is fitted.

What causes it

Causes of the Viessmann b0 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Sensor lead or plugThe lead runs across the top of the heat exchanger to the control unit and is disturbed at every service. A broken core or unplugged connector gives b8.Common
Sensor failedFlue gas sensors live in a hot, wet, acidic environment and fail short (b0) or open (b8) with age.Common
Condensate in the sensor connectorA leak from the flue connection or the condensate trap wets the plug and reads as a short. The leak is the repair.Occasional

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
