What F9 means

F9 on a Vitodens is a fan fault: the burner control unit commanded a speed, read the tachometer feedback, and the two did not agree. Viessmann literature also describes a related condition as the fan not being at standstill when it should be, which is the same interlock viewed from the other end — the control unit needs to know the fan's state precisely at both ends of the cycle. Either way the burner is blocked, and there is no way around that. Two causes dominate. The first is a worn fan, where the bearings have dried out after years of service and the fan can no longer hold its commanded speed. The second is a flue restriction, which alters the resistance the fan works against and throws the speed reading even though the fan itself is perfectly sound. Viessmann fans are generally well made and last, so on a Vitodens it is worth being slightly more sceptical than usual about a diagnosis that jumps straight to the fan without the flue having been checked.

Common questions about Viessmann F9

Should I let them replace the fan straight away?

Ask whether the flue has been checked and the connections verified first. Both produce this code, both are much cheaper, and a Vitodens fan is not a trivial purchase. A good engineer will have done this anyway and will not mind confirming it.

Can I use hot water only until it is repaired?

No. The fan interlock applies to every burner operation, so nothing will fire. A plug-in electric heater and the immersion, if you have a cylinder, are the practical stopgaps.

Is there anything I can look at myself?

Look at the flue terminal from the ground in daylight and note anything obviously blocking it. Do not remove any casing — a Vitodens burner compartment is sealed for good reason.
