Viessmann FA fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

The fan did not come to rest when the control unit expected it to — "fan idle state not reached". A lockout on the fan or its control, for an engineer.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at the Viessmann properly.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Viessmann FA

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.

What FA means

FA is the mirror of F9. The row reads "Burner in a fault state — Fan idle state not reached" on the B1HA/B1KA, B1HC/B1KC, 111-W B1LB and B1LD and the 050-W BPJD; the older WB1A, WB1B and WB1C editions word the same cause "Fan not at standstill". Between burner cycles, and before it starts a new one, the burner control unit expects the fan to have stopped and to read zero speed from the tacho signal. If the fan is still turning — or the control unit is being told it is — the start sequence cannot begin from a known state and the unit locks out. Viessmann's measures are "Check the fan, fan connecting cables and fan control. Press Reset."

A genuinely free-running fan that will not stop is unusual; the commoner reality behind FA is a tacho signal that is noisy or stuck, so the control unit sees speed where there is none, and that traces to the low-voltage fan lead and its plug or to the fan's own electronics. On the Vitotronic 200-W B2HB the row is widened to "Fan idle state or set speed not reached", which folds the F9 complaint into the same code. The householder's part is the single reset for the unit (rotary selector to RESET under two seconds on WB1B, WB1C and B1HA; "R" for two seconds on B1HC; Reset key on WB1A; MODE and OK on BPJD; reset button R on a Vitotronic unit), then the contractor if it returns. On the 2020-on numeric-table units the equivalent is F.72 (fan idle state not reached).

What causes it

Causes of the Viessmann FA fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
Fan tacho signal or control leadThe low-voltage lead that carries the speed signal back to the control unit. A poor plug connection or a chafed core reports movement that is not there. The most common finding behind FA.Common
Fan electronicsThe fan's own drive board produces the speed signal. When it fails the fan may run on or report incorrectly; the whole fan is the replacement part.Occasional
Fan control on the control unitThe input that reads the tacho, or the output that should have brought the fan to rest. The last of Viessmann's three measures, and diagnosed by elimination.Rare

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
