This fault can involve incomplete combustion and carbon monoxide.

0800 111 999Viessmann FC fault codewhat it means and how to fix it
On a 100-W, 111-W or 050-W the electrical fan control in the control unit is faulty. On a Vitotronic 200-W the same letters mean a gas train or blocked flue fault. Engineer either way.

Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at your Viessmann FC
We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer through the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see their registration card when they arrive — it is the register, not the van, that tells you they are qualified.
Which display does your Viessmann have?
The right answer depends on what you can see. Pick the one that matches.
Choose the option on the left that matches what your appliance is doing, and the answer for that case appears here.
Which display does your Viessmann have?
Electrical fan control in the control unit faulty. Viessmann: check the fan connecting cable and replace it if necessary, or replace the control unit. Burner blocked, so the boiler retries on its own; no reset is listed.
Book a Gas Safe engineer. Nothing to reset.
Which display does your Viessmann have?
Gas train faulty, modulation valve control faulty or flue gas path blocked. Viessmann: check the gas train cables and the gas train, check the flue system for blockages or constrictions, then press reset button R.
One press of R; if FC returns, switch the boiler off and call a Gas Safe engineer — a blocked flue is one of the listed causes.
What FC means
FC is one of the codes where the control unit decides the meaning. On the two-character 100-W units (WB1A excepted — its table has no FC), the 111-W B1LA to B1LD and the 050-W BPJD the row is "Burner blocked — Electrical fan control (control unit) faulty — Check fan connecting cable; replace if necessary or replace control unit." The burner control unit drives the fan with a PWM signal and reads its speed back; when that loop fails in a way the unit attributes to itself rather than to the fan, it blocks the burner. Blocked, not locked out: the boiler will try again by itself, and an FC that comes and goes is a fan lead with an intermittent connection, which is why Viessmann put the cable first.
On the Vitotronic-controlled 200-W B2HA and B2HB, 222-F B2TA and 242-F B2UA the FC row is "Burner in a fault state — Gas train faulty, faulty modulation valve control or flue gas path blocked — Check connecting cables to the gas train for damage. Check gas train. Check flue system for blockages or constrictions. Press reset button R." That is a lockout, on a different component, with a flue check in it — which is why this page carries the carbon monoxide flag even though the 100-W reading of the code does not need one. If your boiler prints a sentence beside the code, you have the second meaning. Neither version gives the householder anything to do; the 100-W reading needs no reset, and the Vitotronic reading takes the one press of R the operating instructions allow. On the 2020-on numeric-table units the fan-control fault is folded into the HBMU internal-fault rows (F.70 and neighbours) and the gas-train faults are F.348 and F.354.
What causes it
| Cause | What is actually happening | How likely |
|---|---|---|
| Fan connecting cable (100-W, 111-W, 050-W reading) | The lead between control unit and fan, or its plugs. Viessmann's first measure, and the reason an intermittent FC is worth a cable before a control unit. | Common |
| Control unit fan drive (100-W, 111-W, 050-W reading) | The PWM output or tacho input on the burner control unit has failed. The second measure: replace the control unit. | Occasional |
| Gas train or its cables (Vitotronic reading) | A modulation valve that will not follow its control signal, or damaged cables to the gas train. The Vitotronic row's first two measures. | Occasional |
| Flue gas path blocked (Vitotronic reading) | A constriction or blockage in the flue or air intake that the combustion controller cannot compensate for. The third Vitotronic measure, and the safety-relevant one. | Occasional |

What it costs to fix
Typical repair cost
£70–£450

A fan cable within a visit is the low figure. A control unit on the 100-W reading, or a gas train on the Vitotronic reading, is the high one.
