Hotpoint Clock flashingwhat it means

Usually simple to fixOvenLast updated

On some Hotpoint ovens the clock is an interlock, not a convenience. Until the time of day is set, the oven will not cook at all.

Before you start

This one is usually safe to look at yourself. Do not remove any panel that is held on with screws or clips — everything below is done from the outside of the oven.

What this means

Hotpoint state this more explicitly than any other manufacturer in this category, and it is the single most common non-fault in their range. Their wording is that you should always set the time of day before using the oven, and that if you do not, you cannot cook in some oven models. They go further in the same manual: if the first timer is not set, the display keeps flashing and your oven will not start, and for the oven to function you must confirm the time of day by setting it or by touching the clock key while it reads 12:00.

And then the part that catches people — in the event of a power outage, the time of day settings are cancelled and it should be set again. So the sequence is a power cut, a breaker trip or an electrician working on the kitchen, followed by an oven that appears to have died overnight for no reason. Nothing is broken, nothing needs resetting, and no engineer needs to attend. The clock needs setting, which takes under a minute and costs nothing.

What causes it

Causes of Hotpoint Clock flashing, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
A power cut cancelled the time of day settingHotpoint state this directly. Any interruption to the supply clears the clock, and on some models the oven then refuses to start.Common
The oven has never had its clock set since installationOn first start-up the display flashes 12:00 and the oven will not run until the time is confirmed, which surprises people with a brand new appliance.Common
The breaker serving the cooker circuit has trippedIndistinguishable from an outage as far as the oven is concerned, but worth knowing because a breaker that trips repeatedly is a separate problem.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Look at whether the clock or its symbol is flashing. Hotpoint treat that as a diagnosable state rather than a cosmetic one.

  2. Set the time of day. On models showing a flashing 12:00, Hotpoint say you can also simply touch the clock key to confirm it at that value.

  3. Try the oven. On the Beko-lineage double ovens, Hotpoint add a second option: turn the function knobs off and back to the position you want.

  4. If the clock keeps clearing itself, check whether the cooker circuit breaker is tripping, because that is a supply problem rather than an oven one.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Hotpoint oven

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What we check instead

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
