Hotpoint F3E3 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedOvenWhirlpool-lineage models with a food probe. The Beko-lineage Hotpoint double ovens use different documentation and publish no codes at all.Last updated

The food probe is not making proper contact. One of only two Hotpoint oven codes with a published meaning, and the fix is to check the connection.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Hotpoint properly.

What F3E3 means

A food probe measures the core temperature of what you are cooking rather than the air around it, and it plugs into a socket inside the cavity. F3E3 is Hotpoint saying the probe is not well connected or may not be making contact properly, and their instruction is to check the probe first and only call if the error persists after that. It is worth appreciating how unusual this page is for the brand.

Hotpoint publish exactly two oven codes with a meaning attached and this is one of them — everything else is a number to read down the phone. The same fault shows up in a second form in other manuals in the range, filed under the symptom rather than the code: a cooking cycle with the probe ending without evident cause, or F3E3 printed on the screen, with the cause given as the food probe not being properly connected. Both point at the same check.

The practical implication is that a probe fault does not stop the oven working, it stops one way of using it working, so there is no reason to be without an oven while you sort it.

What causes it

Causes of the Hotpoint F3E3 fault code, most common first
CauseWhat is actually happeningHow likely
The probe is not fully seated in its socketHotpoint’s own wording covers both a probe that is not well connected and one not making contact properly, which is the first thing to eliminate.Common
Damage at the plug or along the leadA probe lives in a hot cavity and gets handled and cleaned. A break near the connector reports the same way as a bad connection.Common
The probe itself has failedWhat is left once the connection has been checked, and the point at which Hotpoint route you to the call centre quoting the code.Occasional

What to try yourself

  1. Let the cavity cool, then unplug the probe and plug it back in firmly. Hotpoint say to check the probe first and that is exactly what they mean.

The socket is inside the oven. Do not reach into a hot cavity to fiddle with a connector — the code is not urgent enough to be worth a burn.
  2. Look at the plug end and along the lead for kinks, scorching or a cracked sheath before assuming the connection was the problem.

  3. Run a short cook with the probe to confirm. Hotpoint’s escalation only applies once the code persists with the probe correctly entered.

  4. If it keeps happening, cook without the probe in the meantime and call, quoting the error exactly as displayed.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Hotpoint F3E3

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

What it costs to fix

Nothing if the connection was the problem. A replacement probe is the usual outcome otherwise, and it plugs in rather than needing fitting.

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
