Hotpoint F8E8 fault codewhat it means and how to fix it

Get it checkedOvenSteam models only, such as the HCS9A9PHTSBA compact steam oven. Hotpoint ovens without a water drawer cannot produce this code.Last updated

The water and steam system needs descaling. Hotpoint publish a full two-pass cleaning procedure for this, and it is a genuine owner fix.

Take care

Some of this is safe to check yourself, but the repair itself is not. If the fault comes back after one reset, stop resetting it and get a qualified appliance engineer to look at the Hotpoint properly.

What F8E8 means

This one is for steam models only, and Hotpoint give it a fuller remedy than anything else in their oven documentation. Their published cause is excessive pollution of the water and steam system — their phrase, not a translation of ours, and what they plainly mean is limescale and residue. Their remedy is a two-pass process: fill the drawer with clean water and run the cleaning and descale function, then once that is complete, restart the descaling process using the target solution with the descaler and carry it out again. Only if F8E8 still appears after both passes do they route you to a service centre.

Two things worth drawing out. The first pass is water alone and the second uses descaler, which is a sequence people routinely get wrong by going straight to the chemical. And the code can present in two ways — as F8E8 on the display, or as the steam function simply refusing to be available because of the fault behind it. If your steam function has stopped offering itself and you have not seen a code, this is still the page.

What to try yourself

  1. Fill the drawer with clean water — water only for this first pass — and run the cleaning and descale function through to completion.

  2. Once that has finished, run the descaling process again, this time using the descaler solution. Hotpoint specify both passes and in that order.

  3. Let the second pass complete fully rather than stopping it early, since an interrupted descale leaves the system part way through.

  4. If F8E8 is still there after both passes, contact the nearest service centre. That is where Hotpoint’s published remedy ends.

Get a qualified appliance engineer to look at your Hotpoint F8E8

We do not pass enquiries to a repair firm, so there is no form here. When you book a qualified appliance engineer, tell them the make, the model and the exact code or message on the display, and ask whether they carry parts for this make — that is what turns one visit into a repair rather than a quote.

Common questions about Hotpoint F8E8

Can I just use descaler and skip the water pass?

Hotpoint’s procedure has two passes in a specific order — clean water first, then descaler — and we would follow it rather than shortcut it. The first pass flushes the system before the chemical goes through, and skipping it is the commonest way people end up running the procedure twice anyway.

My steam function has stopped working but I see no code. Same thing?

Possibly. Hotpoint document this fault in two forms: F8E8 on the display, or an inability to use the steam function because of the same underlying failure. If the steam option has stopped being available and nothing else has changed, running the descale procedure is a reasonable first move.

How often should I descale?

Hotpoint do not give an interval in this entry, and it depends heavily on your water. What they do make clear is that the code is what happens when it has been left too long, so if you are in a hard water area and have never run it, that is a strong hint.

Sources and how we verified this

We establish the facts from the sources below and then write the explanation ourselves. We do not copy manufacturer wording and we do not host their manuals.

  • Manufacturer technical and service documentation

This page has not been reviewed by an engineer, and we would rather tell you that than imply otherwise. The severity rating follows what the manufacturer publishes: where they say isolate the appliance and call someone, so do we.
